She did not look surprised. If anything, she seemed to accept the logic of it, turning the statement over as if it were something expected rather than personal.

“And if I had?” she asked.

Soren considered her for a moment before answering.

“Then I would have changed the approach,” he said. “Not the outcome.”

The mark at her throat pulsed faintly.

He noticed it in the subtle change of her breathing, in the way her hand almost rose before she stopped herself.

“Your wolves don’t bow,” she said after a moment.

“They don’t need to.”

The firelight shifted, catching the mark at her throat and drawing its outline into sharper relief.

The thread between them tightened again.

He felt it, but did not acknowledge it.

“This place won’t shield you from pressure,” he added. “It assumes you can stand inside it.”

“I don’t need protection,” she said.

“No,” he replied, more quietly now. “You need a position.”

The words landed harder than intended.

He saw it—not as anger, but as recalculation, the way her gaze narrowed slightly as she adjusted to the implication.

“And what position is that?” she asked.

This time he did pause, not from uncertainty, but from precision.
