Torren’s voice arrives on the cistern link. “Node two remains offline. I have the activation shell isolated. And before anyone asks, yes, I am recording everything, because apparently that is what stops wealthy criminals from calling sabotage a wellness program.”
“Mr. Ashby,” Salo says.
“Formal withdrawal of commentary,” Torren replies. “Informal accuracy maintained.”
Lucy almost smiles.
I allow myself nothing.
Not yet.
Salo turns to me. “Specialist Veyr, explain the node record.”
I step to the evidence station. “Node two was installed under agricultural soil disturbance classification. Its physical location is directly beneath the Hartwell lower field pressure transition feeding the clinic tower. Its activation sequence began after the sealed civic map identified that route as essential supply.”
Sen stands. “Helix has not conceded activation.”
“No concession is required.” I place the code shell on display. “The node accepted a remote command from orbit. It began low-power cycling. It opened a timed constriction sequence. If completed, it would have reduced clinic flow below emergency threshold.”
Nara makes a sound and holds her son tighter.
Salo’s voice hardens. “Source?”
I look to Kaun.
The director speaks. “Authority relay analysis confirms the command passed through a Helix executive channel.”
Sen’s face pales, but her voice remains steady. “Executive channels can be spoofed.”
“Usually,” Kaun says. “This one carried internal confirmation hash.”
Reviewer Noll leans forward. “Identify approving office.”
Kaun does not hesitate. “Vance Corvek. Senior extraction authority.”
Sen has no objection ready this time.
The meeting hall receives the truth quietly. Perhaps they are past shock. Perhaps the shape of Helix has finally become too clear to surprise them.
I continue. “The timer would have created the appearance of infrastructure failure while Central Review’s evacuation authority remained available. The proposed shelter site was already positioned to receive residents. Its contract allowed conversion to compensated relocation after thirty days.”
Noll’s expression hardens. “Central Commerce Safety Review finds sufficient evidence that Helix’s emergency petition was materially compromised. Mandatory evacuation is denied. The north reserve safety hold is lifted pending normal monitoring. All Helix-installed water interfaces are to be disabled under neutral supervision.”
A low sound rises through the hall.
This time, Salo does not stop it.
It is not disorder.
It is people returning to themselves.
Noll continues. “Vance Corvek’s emergency command credentials are suspended pending Central Commerce inquiry. Helix executive channels connected to this matter are placed under preservation lock.”
Sen grips the edge of her station.
“Helix preserves all rights of appeal.”
“Preserved,” Noll says. “Noted. Inoperative for present safety enforcement.”
