I remember it. A small iron plate half-buried near the stone wall. My grandfather pointed it out once, called it a stubborn old thing that didn’t like being touched.

“Can I reach it?”

“Two hundred meters east. Below the ridge wall.”

I check the paused node, then the heading Rethan gave.

“Understood.”

I begin to move.

The field stretches ahead of me, golden and terrible. The ground beneath my feet still hums, softer now but present. The countdown hangs in my mind like a held breath.

When I reach the ridge wall, I find the iron plate half-buried in moss.

It is smaller than I remembered. Rusted. Stubborn.

I kneel and clear the moss.

Three symbols.

Cup. Seed. Grave.

I press them in order.

The iron plate opens on a groan that seems to come from the earth itself.

Beneath it, a manual valve wheel.

I grab it and turn.

The hum beneath the field changes pitch.

Then stops.

Torren’s voice comes over the feed, almost disbelieving. “Node two is offline. Full shutdown.”

I lean against the ridge wall, my hands still gripping the valve wheel, my heart pounding so hard I can hear it in my ears.

I stopped it.

For now.

I drop my eyes to the timer on the node panel—still frozen at 32:14—and feel the weight of what Helix attempted.

And the weight of what they lost by doing it.

The valley has spoken.

And Helix has heard.

I think maybe that is a good thing.

The celebration comes slowly at first.

Then all at once.

People from the hall spill out into the field as the news spreads. Children run through the rows of young grain. Nara collapses onto the clinic steps and cries without shame. Torren’s voice carries from the cistern feed, demanding to know what the hell the countdown meant and whether anyone has gotten Helix’s activation codes yet.
