“What are you thinking about?”

His deep voice knocked her out of her head, and she smiled down at him, running her fingers through his hair. “Nothing really.”

He sat up, turning to face her. “Really?”

Her stomach did a jig, bouncing into her diaphragm. Now was probably not the best time to do this, but they’d promised they’d be honest with each other moving forward, so here went nothing. “I was just thinking about Claudia and Marissa.” She tried to keep the sadness out of her voice, but didn’t quite manage.

“Oh, mi cariño.” He cupped her cheek, sweeping his thumb across her cheekbone. “I’m sorry you didn’t get to say goodbye.”

“Me, too.”

“But, you know, I’ve been thinking...”

Her heart stuttered to a stop. Her hopes shot sky high, and she tried to tamp them down, but she couldn’t quite manage. “Yeah?” Her voice came out shaky. She so badly wanted him to be on the same page.

“How would you feel if we adopted them?” There was a cautiousness in his voice, like he was tiptoeing on eggshells around the room. Time seemed to stop.

And then she squealed and launched herself at him. He caught her against his chest, falling backwards onto the sofa, leaving her sprawled out on top of him. She pushed up on her arms so she could stare down at him. “Are you serious?”

There was a light in his eyes that she’d never seen before, for all the years they’d been together. “I’ve never been seriouser.”

“That’s not a word.” She couldn’t help the smile that spread across her face.

“Sure it is.” He reached up and cupped her neck. “Is that a yes?”

“Yes. Yes. Yes.” She punctuated each word with a quick kiss against his mouth.

On the last one, he held her to him, kissing her deeply. She kissed him back, her heart and soul feeling like they were filled with helium. Ready to float away if she just let go. She’d never been happier in her life.

And while it had been a painful journey, she couldn’t regret it. Because it ultimately led to here, where she was going to get everything she’d always wanted.

A knock on the door sounded.

Owen rolled her over on to the sofa and then pushed to his feet. “That will be the pizza.” He grabbed his wallet from the coffee table and then glanced at her. “Stay right there.”

She reached her arms over her head in another full body stretch. Her muscles pulled in a delicious way, and she moaned. “I’m not going anywhere. Ever again.”

He swept his gaze over her, both adoration and heat in his blue eyes. “Good girl.” He then turned and headed toward the front door.

Her entire body tingled, her nipples puckering. Looked like it was going to be a long night. And she’d love every minute of it.
