Okay, so maybe last night had changed things. At least a little.
But it was fine. Everything was fine. They were both adults, capable of making their own decisions. And they’d decided to do this. Whatever this was.
No. She knew exactly what this was. It was a going-with-the-flow, one-last-time, get-it-out-of-their-system kind of thing. Nothing more, nothing less.
Maybe she should sleep on her makeshift bed on the floor again. She knew what to expect now, given the cracked window, so if she just piled on a couple more blankets, she should be fine.
Her back ached in protest. The floor was rather uncomfortable. And the idea of stretching out on it was incredibly unappealing. Maybe she was overthinking this. And by maybe, she meant she was totally overthinking this. Which was always what happened when it came to Owen. He turned her brain to mush, for so many reasons, and in so many ways.
Maybe she should just follow his lead. See what happened.
With another deep breath, she left the bathroom and crept across the hall and back into the bedroom. Owen was in bed already, and had gotten dressed in his pajamas. Or, at least she assumed he had. He was sitting up, his back against the headboard, the covers pulled up to his waist. But he wore the same top as last night, so it was a relatively safe assumption he wasn’t going bare assed below the waist.
She let her gaze trail over him. She couldn’t deny she missed him being naked. He was so much fun to look at, and touch. Taste.
He shook his head, clearly catching on to her disappointment. “No way I am going commando in a house full of people. What if there’s an emergency or something? My bare ass isn’t running around here, herding folks outside.”
She pulled her lips between her teeth to stop from laughing. But he was right. Besides, it was too cold in here to sleep naked. Not that she would really have any issues pressed up against him. The man was like a furnace.
“Get over here.” He lifted the covers up in clear invitation. And yup, he was wearing his flannel pajama bottoms.
Even though there was a part of her that cautioned against it, she dove in head first and climbed into the bed with him. He scooted until he was lying down, and she spooned in next to him, her head on his shoulder. He gave her a squeeze before reaching over and turning off the lamp.
The darkness enveloped them, bringing back a sense of isolation. Just them, insulated in their little bubble. He pressed a kiss to her forehead, and she sighed and closed her eyes. Rain lashed against the window, the sound adding to the feeling.
Sleep barreled down on her like a freight train off the tracks. She snuggled against the long length of him, like she had for so many years, and sighed. The world fell away, and she was sound asleep in seconds.
