“I have a few interviews coming up and want to rent out a nice space to hold them in.”

“We live in one of the most photogenic cities in the country. You’re telling me you can’t find somewhere outside for your interviews? For free?”

I feel a hand stroking the inside of my thigh, and I know what Dani’s doing. I shake my head, trying not to get distracted.

“Trust me, Gavin. These need to be held in a professional setting.”

“What are the stories?”

I feel Dani’s hands again.

“You know what?” I cough. “Email me the details and I’ll talk to Mr. White. Sound good?”

“Thanks, boss!” She gets up and starts making her way to the door. As she reaches for the handle, she turns back towards me. “Oh, you haven’t seen Dani anywhere, have you?”

“Nope. Haven’t seen her.”

“Uh-huh.” She nods, looking around the room. “I guess I’ll see you later then.”

I wave. “Bye, Alexa.”

“Bye, Gavin.” She reaches for the door handle, but right before opening it, she singsongs, “Bye, Dani!”

I drop my head and hear Dani respond weakly from under the desk. “Bye, Alexa.”

Alexa laughs as she opens the door and walks out, slamming it behind her.

Dani climbs out from under her desk, cheeks red with embarrassment. I can’t help but laugh as I pull her towards me.

“Well, it looks like I lost the bet.” I smile.

“You did.”

“So, what horrible show are we watching this weekend?”

“Haven’t decided yet. But it’s going to be cheesy and corny and everything you hate.”

“As long as I’m with you, I’ll love it.” I place a quick kiss on her lips. When I pull away, I can’t help but watch her for a moment. “As much as I would love to stay in this post-orgasm bliss, I do have to ask, are you okay with what happened today?”

“What do you mean?”

“Dani, I know you. Mr. White told me about the subpoena. Even though everything is going to be fine, and they don’t have a leg to stand on legally, I know that brain of yours is running through a thousand scenarios and freaking out.”

She scrunches her face. “I don’t like that you know me so well.”

“It’s a gift, sweetheart.” I kiss the top of her forehead.

“I’m not okay. But I will be. And honestly, it’s not the subpoena that’s messing me up. I got a call today. From Sam.”

I try not to show my anger to this recent development. “What did he want?”

“Just didn’t seem to understand the concept of us being, you know, broken up. He had it in his head that we are still together.”

Dani proceeds to tell me about her conversation and my blood boils. How this man worked so hard to get her, just to completely ruin it by not only treating her horribly, but by being an all-around douche, is beyond me. But I’m so proud of her when she tells me how she stood up for herself and called him out. I just need to make sure he doesn’t do something drastic because of it. Sam doesn’t seem to know the difference between love and control, and that can be very dangerous.

“I’m sorry you had to deal with that. I’m sorry you had to deal with everything today. Do you want to take the day off? No one would blame you.”

“Hell no. If anything, working is a great way to get my mind off things.” She grabs my wrist to look at my watch. “In fact, I really should get back to it.”
