“Show me how much later?” I nudge his shoulder with mine.
“Absolutely.”
We get back to the newsroom and I find Alexa waiting at my desk. I didn’t see her this morning because she was out on an assignment, so I’m preparing myself for the millions of questions.
“Oh my God! Dani!” She practically tackles me as I approach her. “Are you alright? Do you have any prison tattoos? Who do I need to hurt?”
“You are ridiculous,” I laugh. “But we do have a lot to talk about. Can you grab lunch?”
“Lucky for you my story wrapped up early today, so I’m all yours.”
I turn to Gavin. “You want to come?”
“I think it’s best if it’s just you guys. But I’ll be here waiting if you need anything.” He winks and heads back to his office.
I let out a heavy sigh. “Let’s go. We need comfort food. Now.”
Chapter 29
Gavin
Aknock at my office door pulls my focus from my computer screen. Dani stands there, a little more composed than the last time I saw her.
“I’m guessing lunch went well?”
“It was… interesting,” she replies, a small smile tugging at her lips.
I swivel my chair fully to face her. “What does that mean?”
She steps farther into the office and sinks into one of the guest chairs. “Pretty sure Alexa now has a hit out on Sam.”
“How much did you tell her?”
“Everything.”
I raise my eyebrows. I knew they were best friends, but I wasn’t sure Dani was ready to spill everything about the tape. “And… how are you feeling?”
She chuckles, more confident than I expected. “It’s going to be okay.”
Agent Russo texted Dani late last night—the FBI finished going through the apartment. He couldn’t say what they found, but hopefully it was enough to build a case against Sam once he’s back in town in a few weeks. Dani also decided to tell them about the tape. She knows how difficult revenge porn cases are to prosecute, but if there’s a lead, maybe something can be done. For all she knows, they might have already found it in the apartment. The thought that it could have been under her own roof all along makes my stomach twist.
“I’m so proud of you. You are the strongest person I know. If we weren’t at work right now, I’d kiss you.”
She laughs, shaking her head. “Like that’s ever stopped you.”
“Yeah, well… now we have extra eyes on us. Gotta be on our best behavior.”
She rolls her eyes.
“So, I know I’m going to regret asking this,” I hesitate. “But did Alexa mention what went down with her and Emmett?”
She grins. “Oh boy did she.”
I cover my face with both my hands. “I’m going to need so much therapy, aren’t I?”
She starts to relay the story to me when there’s a knock on my door. Saved by the bell.
“Yes?” I call.
