We have to be.
We reach the location Ahren gave us; it’s some kind of club. I don’t like the look of it, and the air is ominous around here.
“Really? He chose this place?” I whisper as Jayce parks his bike.
“Yeah, looks like the kind of place my bike would be stolen,” Jayce mutters, his brows knitted together.
“Not if it’s not noticeable,” I reply, lowering my voice as I whisper a spell under my breath, letting the magic settle over it so it fades from attention. It’s still there, but no one will truly see it unless they’re looking for it.
“Nice,” he says. Our eyes meet before he turns and motions for me to follow.
We walk towards the dingy club, and there’s no one standing outside, so we slip inside. The moment we step through the heavy metal door, it’s clear the bike isn’t the only thing people would steal.
The air is thick with smoke and heat, bodies pressed too closely together. Several women are wearing only jewellery, dancing on the stage. The bass vibrates through the floor and up my spine, but it’s not the noise that gets to me.
It’s the uneasy gazes upon us – or should I say, looking at me, in a way that makes my stomach twist. They may not be touching me, but the way they look at me makes my skin crawl all the same.
One of them doesn’t even bother to look away when I meet his eyes, his smirk leering at me. Someone else brushes past me, standing a little too close, his shoulder grazing mine in a way that definitely isn’t accidental.
This place… I don’t like it.
Jayce steps up behind me, wrapping an arm around me possessively, resting it over my breasts as we make our way through the crowd of leering men. It’s then that I realise there are barely any women here, aside from the strippers on the stage and the ones walking around serving the men.
Ahren is disgusting to come here! Urgh, I am going to sort him out!
Another man comes close, but his gaze flicks to Jayce, and he averts his gaze and walks off. It’s subtle, but I can feel Jayce’s aura enough to send a message.
The looks don’t disappear, but there’s hesitation where there was boldness before, a few of them backing off, realising I’m Jayce’s.
I let out a soft breath, my body relaxing slightly as I lean back into him. The heat of his body offers warmth and protection.
We’re halfway across the room when I feel a hand ghost the side of my ass. I jerk away just as I feel Jayce’s aura surge; he’s faster, already knocking the pervert’s hand away. He then grabs him by his collar, shoving him roughly – hard enough that he is thrown into a nearby table, the drinks smashing onto the floor as the men nearby move away. None are startled, as if it is the norm around here.
“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” Jayce snarls, even though I know he’s controlling his anger. But even then, he screams danger, and the man has figured it out.
“Mate, relax, it was nothing-” the guy starts, raising his hands in surrender, but Jayce doesn’t let him finish.
Striding over to him, he grabs him by his shirt tightly, lifts him clean off the ground, and pins him against the table, making the man groan on impact.
“So much as look at her again, and you won’t live to see another day,” he snarls, his jaw clenched, his eyes burning into the man’s. My heart hammers, realising he’s extremely angry.
“I didn’t mean anything by it. Look, I’m sorry,” the guy tries again, stuttering as he looks around, panicked.
“Then keep your hands to yourself, and get the fuck out of here,” Jayce says coldly. “Because if you stay, I will fucking kill you.”
A tense silence falls, and everyone can tell that the threat was more than just a warning. It was a promise.
The guy nods quickly. “Yeah, yeah, alright. I’m leaving.”
Jayce holds him there for a second longer before finally shoving him to the floor as he lets go.
The guy doesn’t hesitate, scrambling to his feet and disappearing into the crowd.
Jayce stands there for a moment, shoulders tense, breath slightly heavier, like he’s struggling to control himself.
Then he turns back to me, and I instantly move towards him, knowing he needs that. His hand finds my waist, pulling me in close, firmer than before, like he’s making a point now.
“Are you ok?” he asks quietly, but the tension is still there.
