She rolled her eyes. “Where are we going?”

“Surprise.”

“Legal?”

“Yes.”

“Public?”

“Mostly.”

“Mostly is not a place.”

“It’s enough information.”

Lane leaned back in her chair. “You do realize surprises from you have included illegal surveillance, adult diapers, and relocation against my better judgment.”

“This one has no diapers.”

“That is a devastatingly low bar.”

“I’m clearing it.”

“You better.”

“I will.” He nodded toward her plate. “Eat. You’ll need comfortable shoes.”

Her brows lifted. “For what?”

“You’ll see.”

“I do not like mystery dates.”

“You’ll like this one.”

“That confidence is concerning.”

“My confidence is one of your favorite things about me.”

“My favorite thing about you is your quarterly donation. And not in a smart-ass way. When you said you use your powers for good, I didn’t think I was included in that. So many lives are going to change now that we have half a million in funding. Thank you again.”

“You’re welcome, Lav.”

He kissed her forehead.

“And your mouth, when it’s not annoying the hell outta me.”

His gaze darkened.

Lane smiled slowly, fully aware of what she had done.

There she was.

His good girl.

His Lavender.

Still guarded and still armed. Still threatening structural damage to his life if he mishandled her. But sitting at his table and enjoying the meal he chose because he had paid attention, with eyes still soft from his words even as her mouth sharpened to protect her.
