Immediately she regretted sending the text. Sullivan was busy working the case and he didn’t have time to read or respond to stupid messages. Besides, like him or loathe him, Rivers was here looking after her. It was ungrateful of her to complain when she’d been provided with police protection.

Amy got up from the table, took her cup into the kitchen and filled the coffee pot. She glanced over at Rivers again, who was totally engrossed with something on the screen. He had better be using her laptop for work purposes and not looking at porn. Not that he seemed the type to look at porn. He was too squeaky clean. Still, you never could tell. She’d thought David was a choirboy the first six months they’d dated.

The coffee pot boiled and she poured her drink, not bothering to offer Rivers a refill on his tea. She was sure he would soon inform her if he wanted another cup, probably by clicking his fingers at her again, as if she was his maid.

Although it irritated her being in the same room as him, she was loath to go through to the bedroom and let him take over her living room. Instead she returned to the table, set down her cup, and noticed she had a message flashing on her phone.

It was from Sullivan.

I can imagine. Lock him out in the hall.

She smiled. It was such a little thing, but she felt stupidly happy he’d texted her back.

‘What are you grinning at?’

Amy glanced up to find Rivers watching her, his eyes narrowed suspiciously.

It’s none of your damn business. ‘Nothing. Just a text.’

Rivers gave an irritated sigh, set the laptop down on the coffee table and glanced at his watch. ‘It’s getting close to lunch. Do you have anything to eat around here?’

Seriously? He’d sat and stuffed half a dozen pastries and now he wanted her to feed him?

‘How can you be hungry? You didn’t eat long ago.’

‘It was a couple of hours and yes, I am hungry. Can you make me a sandwich?’

Balling her fists, Amy got up from the table, went through to the kitchen and opened her refrigerator.

‘I have cheddar.’

‘I’m allergic to cheese.’

‘Egg?’

‘I like meat. Ham or beef. Chicken if not.’

Amy shook her head, closed the door.

‘Well, sorry, you’re out of luck. Cheese or egg is all I have.’

‘Are you serious?’ Rivers huffed.

‘What?’

‘You have people here watching over you, keeping you safe, and you can’t be bothered to feed them?’

Amy’s temper boiled over. He had crossed a line.

‘You ungrateful little shit. I offered to make you a sandwich. It’s not my fault if you don’t like what I’ve got in the refrigerator. Besides, I wasn’t aware I was supposed to be providing room service for you.’

‘It’s not that you’re supposed to be providing anything, it’s just plain good manners.’ Rivers glared at her, his words clipped. ‘I’ll have to go out and get some lunch from somewhere. I can’t go all afternoon hungry.’

‘Fine, go. I don’t really care.’

‘You’ll to have to come with me. I can’t leave you here alone.’ He got up shaking his head, closed the lid of the laptop. ‘This is such an inconvenience.’

‘Seriously? We have to go out just to get you food?’
