Safe.
“Trevor, show him the agreement. Show him what that monster made you sign.”
“Paige! No, What—”
“Dick couldn’t do a thing about your lawyer seeing it. Nothing.” Trevor looks at me before he drops his head to his hands. “You have to know it’s true.”
He lets out a slow breath, dropping his shoulders when he responds, his voice muffled. “I know it.”
“You always knew.”
He shakes his head. “Not always, but it was while I was in college that it started to sink in. By the time I had enough money to consider hiring a lawyer—” He sighs and takes my hand. “He’s going to do everything in his power to keep us in court and wrapped up in legal shit.”
“So what?”
“So what …” He skims over the papers I have scattered on the desk in front of us, and the paper folded and gripped in my hands. “What do you want?”
I don’t hesitate. “I want him to pay for the damage he’s done.”
He lifts my hand and grazes my knuckles with his lips, making the hairs on my arms stand straight up. He pulls away and drops my hand, taking the paper instead. “Okay.”
“Okay?”
He nods and hands the paper to Joseph, not dropping my gaze. “I have a plan, and we need to discuss everything happening in the bank right now. We could get him served tomorrow if you want to—”
I bounce in my seat. “Yes!”
“But, I have something in the works that will be a more thorough dismantling of everything he finds precious.”
“Oh.” I think it over before I shake my head. “I’m done waiting. I want him buried, and soon.”
“What if I promise that it will be done before the end of the month?” Trevor lifts his hand and brings it toward my face, just to drop it back into his lap. I consider the timeline.
“Honestly, it would be better on this side of things as well.” Joseph’s voice makes me jump. I was so wrapped up in Trevor, I forgot he was even here. “It’ll give me more time to dig deeper into this document and learn every single way to rip it to shreds. Sounds good?”
I ignore him. “Next week? Or more like the end of the month?”
He nods. “Carter has some stuff planned for next week I’d like to help him with, and I doubt you’ll want to miss it.”
“At the Friday Night Music Extravaganza?”
“Yes. Then we focus on taking down my father.”
“Why don’t we get all of the paperwork rolling so all you all need to do is give me a call and the papers get served?” Joseph is already up and grabbing different forms, pens, and pulling something up on his desktop.
“About time.”
“How’s Becky feeling?”
The elevator stops at the next floor, letting a few random men and a striking woman on. She’s tall, fit, and eyes Trevor like he’s a snack, smiling at him coyly. I scoot closer to him, but watch her.
“I’m pretty sure she called Carter last night.” Suit Woman cuts me a glance, looks me up and down, and wrinkles her nose at me.
Okay, lady. Move along.
Trevor chuckles. “I’m confident she made his entire month by doing so.” He straightens his tie for the fifth time in the last few minutes, giving me an idea. Holding the woman’s eyes, I step to him, crowding him into the back of the lift, and straighten it for him. I look to see what I’m doing, and get distracted by the dent in his shirt collar. I cluck at the imperfection and reach up on my tippy-toes, brushing against him with my growing body as I tidy his whole suit, shirt, and tie situation. Pleased with the results, I pat him twice on the chest and hum in contentment. When I take a step back, his hands catch mine, holding me in place up against him.
“Paige.” My name comes out as a plea when I meet his searing gaze. His pupils are blown and color lines the top ridge of his cheeks. Oh my God.
