“Oh yeah? What are you thinking about?”
“About how fucking suspect it is that she popped up while you were trying to find a dress to marry me in. Something isn’t adding up.”
Sitting back against the sofa, D’Vaughn considered me, a contemplative look gracing her features. “Oh,” she murmured, her lips curving up in dark satisfaction. “I like this. I like it a lot.”
Despite me trying to hold on to my mug, her tone brought a smile to my face. It was low and sensual and made me think of things that didn’t require clothing. I licked my lips slowly in an attempt to erase my expression and possibly bring my scowl back.
“You like what, preciosa?”
“This...jealousy.” She gestured at me. “This whole possessive thing you have going on.”
Raising to her knees, she lifted a leg to straddle my lap. Instead of sitting down, she hovered over me, using her grip on the back of the sofa for leverage as she leaned in to nuzzle at my neck. I was stunned into silence by her bold move. It was technically PG, but still not anything I would have expected from the ever-bashful and constantly blushing D’Vaughn.
Fuck me. Without even knowing the decision I’d made to keep things nonsexual between us, she was making this difficult as hell.
“Yeah,” she drawled softly into my ear, “I’m liking this quite a bit.”
Unable to help myself, I palmed her thighs and squeezed, letting my eyes drift closed as I inhaled her earthy scent, a mixture of Egyptian musk and shea butter that tugged at me like an invisible version of the hook from Showtime at the Apollo. I didn’t like the accusation that I was jealous, but possessive was one that I would own without hesitation. D’Vaughn was mine. She would continue to be mine for the next three weeks, and if I played my cards right, she’d be mine for a long time after that. The reemergence of Tanisha didn’t sit well with me, and something told me that this wouldn’t be the last time we’d have the displeasure of her presence.
The wet rasp of D’Vaughn’s tongue slicked against my neck, bringing my thoughts running back to her. Licking my lips, I asked, “What else do you like, preciosa?”
“I like how you taste.”
Señor ten piedad. I thought I’d had a thing for the reserved D’Vaughn, but this unapologetically horny D’Vaughn had my body heated and vibrating with want.
“What a coincidence,” I murmured. “I like how you taste too.” Fuck! That was the wrong thing to say, but the words just tumbled out of my mouth before I could catch them. I should’ve been telling her to cool her jets.
Curving her neck, she pressed an openmouthed kiss to my neck before whispering, “Show me.”
Digging my hand into her bun, I lifted her head from my neck and brought it to mine, crashing our lips together in a fierce, passionate kiss. She was ready for me, meeting me halfway, receiving my tongue stroke for stroke. When she spread her legs even further and sat in my lap, settling her weight onto one of my thighs, the moan she released filled me up. I wanted, I needed, I had to have moremoremore, and then she rocked her hips against me and I groaned, and suddenly those images of us doing things without clothes were so close to being reality that my breath hitched. As soon as the realization hit me, alarms blared in my head. I tried like hell to fight through the fog of lust to heed their warning.
Was it wise to take things further when D’Vaughn couldn’t even fathom that my feelings for her could be real?
Wouldn’t sex give her an excuse to dismiss the validity of my feelings in the future?
What if it’s so good that I wanna marry her for real, but she just wants the check?
That last question pulled me up short, and I broke the kiss abruptly, dropping my head onto the back of the couch as I sucked in air. From our conversation the week before, that was too real of a possibility to ignore. Once I was in, I was in—I’d told her as much—but sex likely wasn’t the best act to engage in with her already being unsure if she could trust my intentions. D’Vaughn didn’t stop her momentum, attacking my neck with the same fervency that she’d just shown my mouth. Licking and sucking along my jaw until she reached my earlobe, which she then traced with her tongue. The sensation that ran through my body visibly shook me. My toes might’ve even curled in my sneakers. I felt her cheeks lift against my neck as she grinned.
“What are you doing, preciosa?” I rasped, needing the distraction of a conversation to help me get my bearings.
“Ouch,” she husked, giggling softly. “If you have to ask, I must be doing a terrible job.”
The bedroom voice she was using had a steady percussion happening between my legs.
“I have to ask because things are moving kind of fast and I want to make sure we’re on the same page.”
She stiffened and leaned back to look at me. I tried to keep my expression open and amicable, but apparently, she didn’t like what she saw because she quickly climbed off of me and scooted a sofa cushion away.
“Telling me that I’m the one you were talking about when you said you were looking for love isn’t moving fast, but doing...this is?” She sliced her hand in the air between us, the sharp move matching the suddenly sharp lines on her usually round face.
I blew out a silent breath and turned to her.
“What exactly is this supposed to be?” If she couldn’t even say the words, then what was the damn point?
“You know what?” She broke off on a mirthless chuckle, shaking her head as she stared at something past my head. Huffing, she shot to her feet and stomped across the room and down the hall.
Pursing my lips, I quickly shot off a text to Rhea, telling her not to wait up, then followed after D’Vaughn, catching her just before she walked into one of the bedrooms.
