“Who am I kidding?” she says, her voice still breathy. “I think we both want the same thing.”
Before I can risk it all and close the last cusp of space between us, she backs away and goes to the closet to gather her things. As she exits the RV, it feels like she takes part of me with her.
I find myself . . . missing her.
How horrible.
I really need to focus on something else. Like how I’ll get Blayne to admit that he fucked Charity. I’m almost certain he’s our culprit, but I have no proof. Just an idea.
While Josie showers, I throw on a t-shirt and some cargo shorts. My plan needs to go into action tonight. I’ll clue Josie in while we’re at the store.
After all, I’m not only running out of time with Josie. I’m running out of time to assist Ice Pick as well. If I don’t help him before the last day, I won’t be able to help at all.
There is no way the Carter children will let me walk out of this retreat with my life, and I don’t blame them. I just want to make sure I tie up all of my loose ends before I go. If I have my way, the Ice Pick ends will be tied up in a bow before we leave Arizona.
Chapter Twenty-Nine
Josie
The girls are already seated around the fire by the time King and I return from the store. My lengthy shower and a flat tire ate up entirely too much time. I hurry toward the blaze with a fresh bag of marshmallows, a box of graham crackers, and several bars of Hershey’s chocolate.
Imagine my shock when I see that they’re already making s’mores without me.
“Sorry I’m late,” I say as I drop the grocery bags next to theirs on a nearby folding table.
Cat bites into her snack, and white goop oozes on all sides, reminding me of earlier. I try not to smile.
She chews a few times, then looks at it. “Does this taste a little off to anyone else?”
I grab what I need and join them at the fire as Kindra sniffs her graham crackers.
“It does smell a little strange,” Kindra says. She takes a nibble, and her lip curls, but then she shrugs. “Fuck it. Nothing is getting between me and melted chocolate.”
As she shovels the rest of it into her mouth, I look around at the group. “Where’d you guys get more ingredients? I didn’t figure Chef would have given us anything after the way we’ve been raiding his bus.”
Frankie turns to me as she holds a mallow over the fire. “We just grabbed the ingredients from your RV. Hope that was okay. The door was unlocked.”
“Yeah, the locks don’t—” My blood freezes in my veins as her words register. “You’re using the marshmallows from . . . my RV?”
Frankie takes a bite and grimaces. “Yeah, but what did you do to them? They taste funny.”
“They were kind of sticky, too,” Eve says.
I jump to my feet and race around the circle, swatting sticks and snacks from hands. When they land in the dirt, I stomp on them for good measure, ensuring no one else will make this mistake.
“Spit it out!” I yell at the poor women who are chewing and looking at me like I’ve lost my mind. “You have no idea where those marshmallows have been! And you don’t want to know.”
The girls stop chewing, but instead of gagging and spitting, they burst into fits of laughter. While they hold their sides and rock back and forth, I’m left standing here, mortified. Do they not understand?
“I put the marshmallows in my—”
“Oh, girl. We know!” Quinn says through giggles. “We really did go to your RV for ingredients, but one whiff of that bag told us everything we needed to know.”
“Your sex-mallows are safe in the cupboard,” Cat says. “Thanks for giving me and Bennett a run for our money. It’s nice to share the spotlight.”
Kindra nods. “And you didn’t even bother cleaning up the ties, so I can see that you share mine and Ezra’s love of bondage.”
“We learned a lot about you tonight.” Eve pushes another marshmallow onto her stick. Then she pats the empty space beside her on the log. “You fit right in, so don’t be ashamed.”
