BOOM! TAATT! BOOM! BOOM!

Burner heard loud gunshots through the phone, causing him to push Storm off his lap and stand to his feet.

“What the fuck, yo! Why the fuck you push me like that!” Storm shouted, mad that he shoved her, causing rug burns instantly on her sensitive skin.

Burner put the phone on speaker as he yelled, trying to get Dexz’s attention, but all he heard was loud guns and glass breaking. Storm heard the last of the shots and covered her mouth with her hand. That’s when the phone went dead. Burner raced around the room, looking for his clothes.

“I gotta go. I gotta find this nigga,” Burner said in a hurry as he slid on his jeans. Storm started dressing as well.

“I’m going with you, because I know the area better, and I’m sure somebody finna call me.” She slid on her leggings.

“Call Pretti and see if she knows his whereabouts.”

“Oh my God, I hope she isn’t with him.”

Storm raced to her phone to call her, but she didn’t get an answer. Storm’s phone started to ring. She thought it was Pretti, but it was her homegirl, Redd.

“Girl! Dexz just got shot near the block. The Dominicans stopped him at a red light and lit his ass up! You need to get over here fast. Shit is fucking crazy!”

“Alright, I’m on my way. You seen Lunden?”

“Nah, ain’t nobody seen him.”

“Alright, I’m coming.”

Storm told Burner the information, and they raced to the crime scene.

When they got there, they saw Dexz’s brand-new car riddled with bullet holes. The scene gave Burner chills. He knew his homeboy probably didn't live through what he was seeing. Dexz was already on his way to the hospital, so they called Lunden’s phone, but he wasn’t answering. They headed to the hospital to see what was going on. Storm called Pretti again, and she finally answered.

“Girl, where are you? Your man has been shot, and they’re saying he is dead!”

“What, are you serious? I just talked to him, but I’m at the hospital. Lunden fractured my nose on some jealous shit. Dexz was supposed to meet me here. I hope it wasn't Lunden who shot him.”

“Wow... why haven't you called me yet? If you’re at the hospital, Burner and I are on the way.”

“Things were moving too fast. I was going to call you, but I’m going to be looking out for Dexz. I’m in the ER. So much is going on right now.”

“I know, but make sure you always keep me informed. I’ll be there.”

Chapter 29

FATE

After Pretti got bandaged up and found out her nose wasn’t broken but indeed fractured, she paced the hallways waiting for an ambulance to pull in. When they pulled the stretcher from the ambulance, she immediately knew it was him by his Retro Jordans. They were fresh, but bloody.

“Dexten!” she shouted when they started wheeling him in.

When she finally got a good look at him, her heart began to flutter, and she felt cold sweat dripping from her forehead. She stood there frozen in front of the stretcher, feeling light-headed as she gazed at him. He looked dead, and it made her uneasy.

“Ma’am, please step back! We have to get him into surgery. We already wasted enough time because of traffic!” Blood was coming from everywhere. She thought for sure he was already dead.

“Baby love, oh my God, is he going to be okay?” she heard Storm shouting. Her hearing was muffled, and her vision became blurry. Before she knew it, everything went black for her, causing her to faint...

The Following Morning...

Five in the morning came fast, and Dexz was out of surgery. The hospital decided to keep her overnight because she fainted when she saw them wheel Dexz through the ER, covered in blood. Her blood pressure dropped tremendously, so she had to get some fluids. Seeing Dexten on his deathbed scared her to death, but she was glad he was alive. The nurse came in and told her he was now in the ICU and could have one visitor; she wasted no time getting herself together to see him.
