“Yes. He'll know.”
She puts me on hold.
Rain hisses down as I keep feeding the fire, my body braced over it, trying to soak up the heat.
The line clicks.
“All right, Lily.” Maria's back, and she's energized. “He's got you, hon. Now I'm going to tell you what he told me.”
“Go.”
“You need to stay where you are. Don’t move, even if you see the plane. And you stay on this phone with me and keep talking. He says you can trust me.”
For some reason tears spring to my eyes, and I choke a sob down.
“Got it.”
“He said he's coming.”
The fire spits and I shudder.
“You still with me, Lily?”
It’s been four months since I've said my real name out loud.
“My name's Olivia.”
Chapter Two
LUCKY
My phone goes off as the party’s in full swing at my brother Hawk’s wedding. It’s the number for the charter base. They have no business calling me on a Saturday I'm not on the roster.
Maria’s voice is concerned. “Lucky, there’s an emergency, I know you aren’t working but…”
“Slow down. Where?”
Maria gives me the coordinates. I turn my back and put my finger in my other ear, while behind me a hundred people are whooping it up as loud as they can.
“That's not... nobody flies that ridge at night, it's…” I stop, because I’m not helping myself. “Did she give you a name?”
“Lily. Said to tell you it's the woman from the Lodge run… the one who read your clipboard. She’s hurt her ankle, says she has a fire burning but she sounded cold.”
My whole body is hot, but I’m shivering as adrenaline floods my system. I clench my fists. “Stay on the phone. Keep her talking and tell her to keep that fire burning. I'm coming to get her.”
I go and find Prez. He's got a beer in one hand, but he takes one look at my face and steps away from the noise. I give him the short version.
Prez doesn't ask why I'd go up there for some woman I don’t know, especially someone working for Rotmere. He’s good like that.
“Keep undercover, if you can. And take Savage's truck, he’s drunk too much to be driving tonight” he says. “Go now.”
Savage’s head whips around, his tie halfway off. He’s holding tight onto the bouquet he caught when the bride tossed it earlier. That boy is like a wild creature who can smell drama the same way they smell rain coming.
“Take the truck, I'll ride with ya, I've got a chainsaw in the back and…”
“You're not coming.”
“I might be useful, Lucky-Lou.” He flexes his impressive muscles and cracks a grin.
