“See, that’s the problem right there.”

“What?”

“You really think I’m stupid.”

“I never said that.”

“You don’t have to.”

There was a brief pause on the other end. Then, she laughed. Not like her regular laugh either. It was that little fake ass laugh people did when they were trying to pretend something hadn’t hit a nerve.

“Girl, I don’t even know what you’re talking about.”

“Then why the fuck you calling me?”

That shut her up. For a second, all I could hear was her breathing through the phone.

I glanced across the table at Drayla, who had completely forgotten about the menu at that point.

She was now watching me. Waiting, and honestly, so was I because Alexia didn’t call me to say hello.

That bitch wanted something, and whatever it was, I was finally ready to hear it without making excuses for her.

“I was just calling to check on you,” she finally said.

“Check on me for what?”

“The pictures.”

I glanced across the table at Drayla.

“What pictures?”

There was a brief pause.

“You haven’t seen them?”

I almost laughed. Keyword: almost. Instead, I kept my voice as normal as possible.

“Seen what, Alexia?”

“The pictures of you and Amani. They’re all over the blogs.”

I pressed my lips together, fighting the urge to say something slick.

“Oh, really?”

“Yeah, girl. It’s bad.”

Drayla’s eyes narrowed from across the table. I held up a finger, letting her know to give me a second.

“Bad how?”

“People are saying all kinds of shit. That you’ve been sneaking around with him. That maybe you and Kyrie aren’t as happy as y’all pretend to be.”

There was something about the way she said that last part that rubbed me wrong. Not because I gave a fuck what people on the internet thought, but because Alexia sounded a little too interested.

“Hmm.”
