Ward answered before I could.

“We may.”

The officer’s gaze moved between us.

“This case is evidence. It will need to remain in Coast Guard custody.”

I couldn’t let that happen.

Not without knowing what was inside.

“It belonged to our grandfather.”

Lieutenant Akana’s expression didn’t change.

“Then we’ll document that.”

“He was murdered.”

That changed it.

Only slightly.

But I saw the interest sharpen in his eyes.

“When?”

“More than three years ago.”

“And you believe this case is connected to his death?”

“Yes.”

Lieutenant Akana looked toward the grounded fishing boat.

Then back at me.

“We’ll open it aboard our vessel with you present.”

Ward shook his head.

“Not until it’s checked for explosives.”

The officer studied him.

“You military?”

“Navy.”

It wasn’t the whole answer.

But it was enough.

Lieutenant Akana gave the case to a member of his team.

“Secure it. Explosive screening first.”

It took almost an hour.
