I wouldn’t let anyone touch me. Eddie tried to help me but I was too scared to move.
Pressing my palms to my belly, I waited. And held my breath. And waited some more. Our baby was an active one and I shushed the entire room.
And then they moved inside me and I let myself feel the pain.
“Trace, baby, what happened.” I felt the whoosh of air as Azlan came into the room and kneeled beside me.
“I fell. Slipped on something. I didn’t mean to but I can feel them. See?” I put Azlan’s hand on my belly where the babe was kicking up a storm.
“I can feel them, omega. But what about you?”
Movement started up around me. Someone yelled for a mop. A room number was called out. Life went on.
“I think I’m okay. I was waiting for them. I didn’t know if it hurt them. What if something had happened? I don’t know…”
By the time I finished talking, I was a blubbering mess of tears.
“Let’s get you to the clinic. I’d like to have you checked out, just in case.”
“I’ll take his rooms and villas. Let me know if he’s okay, please.” Eddie helped Azlan pick me up and I was beyond embarrassed. In all the time I’d worked there, I’d never dropped a tray let alone slipped.
Those non-slip shoes had failed me. As ugly as they were they could at least do their job.
“Does anything hurt?” My alpha asked about a thousand times as we made our way to the clinic. There was a healer and a human doctor there, and they ordered an ultrasound, which came back fine.
The healer demanded I rest for the duration of the day.
Azlan called in and took the rest of the day off as well.
We were back in our room and in bed before he spoke next. “You scared the hell out of me, omega. When Eddie called. I thought… First I thought you’d gone into labor and then, when he told me you fell, I imagined the worst.”
“I did too. I wouldn’t let anyone touch me until I felt our little one moving inside me. I would never forgive myself if they were harmed.”
“Oh, omega, I’m so glad everything turned out okay. I don’t know what I’d do if something happened to you. I love you so much.”
I got the wet clothes off and took a quick shower and, when I came out, Azlan had gotten us dinner.
I had a towel around my waist and went over, enticed by the smell of beef and vegetables.
That was when it happened. For the second time that day, I found myself soaked, and there was a puddle beneath me.
“Alpha,” I whimpered, knowing what that meant. The baby wasn’t early. With bear and wolf fathers, the gestation time was remarkably shorter. We’d really had no idea when the babe would come.
Until now.
“What is it?” His nostrils flared. “Your water.”
“It’s my fault. I fell down. He’s coming early. What if I hurt them? I don’t…”
“Hey, the healer did an ultrasound. Everything was fine. Heartbeat. The baby. All fine. But perhaps the fall triggered the labor. He’s a big baby. He or she. The healer said they weigh almost nine pounds. It was going to be any day now.”
“We have to get to the hospital,” I said. “Or I can have them here. I don’t know what to do, mate.”
I was in full panic mode. I fisted both of Azlan’s sleeves, trying to anchor myself with something. My heart fluttered in my chest and that was when the first contraction hit me. Hard. Right in the back like a vise grip on my spine and hips.
“Whoa!” I said, holding my breath. “They’re coming. I…we have to get to the clinic. I’m not having them here. Not in our room. Please, mate.”
“Come on. Let’s go. I’ll call the healer on the way.”
