I didn’t know.

My hand kept me steady as I pressed it against the wall and crept down another few steps, walking backwards with my light trained on the door above.

As soon as I rounded the stairwell landing to the next floor, an icy breeze blew past me.

What now?

The sound of a caw and a rush of black feathered wings flew over my head.

Two ghostly woman charged after, running straight through me, and I gasped at the sudden chill left in their wake.

Then I saw her.

Meg, in her wolf form, came charging up the stairwell. The relief was short-lived as panic settled in. I needed her far, far away from this place.

“You shouldn’t be here!” I yelled as I hurried down the steps.

There was a growl, and a moment of unreal terror as her massive teeth locked around my arm.

My world flipped to the side as I was thrown onto her back.

I clung to Meg’s soft brown fur as she raced down the stairwell faster than humanly possible, carrying me while I kept the flashlight pointed behind us, scaring off shadows that didn’t seem to follow.

We burst onto the sidewalk of the city streets just as the sun started to rise, coming to a stop in front of my men who stood ready to storm the building.

Marcus held them back, arching a brow in my direction as Meg’s wolf let out a blood-curdling howl.

“Geez, Lieutenant. I didn’t know they gave you wolf-riding lessons in officer school.”

“Can you believe that happened?” Roman asked me, still in shock as he relayed the events of the night.

“I’m a wolf shifter, and I still can’t believe half of the things that are happening lately,” I told him.

He shivered, pulling me close, as Marcus drove the Humvee outside the city walls. “I’m glad to be leaving.”

“Me too.” I glanced behind us, watching as Sarah and Charles scooted closer on the backseat. The two of them were instant friends. I figured that would be the case, with magic flowing so strongly in their blood.

“There are more like them in there,” I told Roman.

“I know.” He nodded. “Let’s deal with one thing at a time. Right now, I could really use a nap.”

We all could. It’d been a long few days, and we were heading back where we started. But this time I was coming home with a whole bunch more people, a witch and a warlock, and a tank with a big gun I still had yet to shoot.

Though I did want to shoot it someday.

Katrina caught my eye. “Are you sure this is okay? You can leave us in the Fringes. I’ll find work out here.”

“Absolutely not,” I told her. “You’re coming with me. I still need to get you those books.”

The drive back to Cerberus was slower than before, especially when Daisy scolded Marcus for being awake for three days straight and made him take a nap so Jacques could drive.

I agreed, already liking Daisy and her sharp, no-nonsense ways. We were going to get along great.
