“Are you sure you’re okay to work?” he asks.

There it is. Doubt. Maybe he’s already thinking about replacements, but the conversation with my manager makes me brush it off.

“Completely fine,” I say brightly. “Ready to go.”

“You know the insurance liability—”

“My manager already cleared it with the network. They want me here. So here I am.”

I’m not lying, but I’m not telling him the whole truth either. The network is happy as long as I don’t collapse on camera. Dain just wants to stay on schedule. And I want to keep my job.

“Okay, then. Let’s start. We’ve got a lot to catch up on, and I don’t want to fall further behind.”

As he walks away, I catch myself thinking about Dr. Sterling. About how he’d tell me that I’m pushing too hard. About how disappointed he’d be, seeing me struggle with these aids, pretending I’m fine, when I’m clearly not. And then I push that thought away, because thinking about him is a distraction I can’t afford.

Me: You’re about to be uninvited to fishing if you don’t shut the fuck up.

I feel guilty that’s how they view me after I’ve run into Yolanda, but she made me bitter. I can’t help it.
