CHAPTER TWENTY
Eme smiles at Logan when Wayne binds their hands together with a soft black rope. She watches his eyes sparkle, and even though he still has blood all over his face, she couldn’t have chosen a better night.
She is his, and he is hers, and after tonight, the entire pack will lay witness to it.
They stare at each other for a long while until Wayne finishes the binding with . . . whatever he is saying. She isn’t paying attention, but she snaps her gaze away from Logan’s when the wolves around them begin to howl in celebration.
Hands still bound together, Logan tugs her to him, angles her head just so, and brings his lips down on her. The kiss is hot but too brief. He pulls away, turns them to face the wolves, and holds their hands up.
Eme leans into him. “Can we get these things off now?”
They turn to Wayne, and he unbinds them. “Congratulations, alphas.”
“Thanks,” Eme says, grinning from ear to ear. Wrists unbound, she focuses her attention back on Logan, who tries so hard to hide his obvious pain. “We should really get you checked out.” She waves over Dr. Grace, who had been waiting on the side since the binding continued. She rushes to them with her medical kit and immediately goes to the wound on his abdomen.
“Stitches?” Logan asks through clenched teeth as she pokes and prods.
He hisses when she touches the wound. “At least for tonight. Your quick healing has already taken effect, but just to be safe, we should stitch it back together. The shoulder, on the other hand, looks to be healing nicely.”
“Right here?” Eme squeaks. “You’re going to sew him up right here?”
“No,” Grace says, chuckling. “If you’ll allow it, I’ll borrow him for a few minutes and take him back to the clinic so that I can numb the area.”
Eme nods, and when Grace starts to lead him away, Eme tries to go too, but Logan stops her.
“I’ll only be gone for a few minutes, Eme. Stay, talk among the others.” The shifters are returning to their human form as dance music begins to play. Eme studies them for a moment, noticing how some watch the interaction.
Even though she wants to argue, Eme doesn’t respond because she knows he’s right. Both of them can’t be gone at the same time. Not after the earlier mess. They need a solid front, and if that includes her being left behind so Logan can be tended to, then she’ll do it.
Grace, who had been waiting for her response, curtly nods at Eme’s silence then leads him away.
She watches them go for a moment until someone wraps his arms around her from behind. She squeals as she’s lifted from the ground. Her feet quickly find the ground once more, and the arms that had held her turn her to face him.
Draven’s smile is infectious, and she can’t help but return it. “I’d say congratulations, but you got stuck with a loser.”
She smacks him on the shoulder. “You just wait. Soon it’ll be your turn.”
Wayne approaches and shoves Draven’s back. “He wouldn’t know a mate if she smacked him across the cheek.”
Draven pokes his chest. “Neither would you, buddy.”
“You two are insufferable,” Eme says halfheartedly.
“Emeline?” a female voice calls.
Eme turns around to face the newcomer and nearly stumbles. Becca is there, twining her fingers together quickly.
“Yes?” What could she possibly want now? If she has a problem, Eme prefers she wait until tomorrow. She may not have been guilty here, but she’s the reason Eme had felt somewhat unwelcome.
Becca straightens her shoulders and drops her hands back to her sides. “I just wanted to say congratulations.”
“Thank you,” Eme responds after a moment’s pause. She hadn’t expected that. Truth be told, she expected some sort of verbal brawl.
“I know we’ve gotten off on the wrong foot, but I hope that you’ll find it in your heart to be civil with me as will I with you.”
Touched but a bit skeptical, Eme inclines her head. “I would like that.”
Becca gives a small smile and backs away. Eme watches as she heads to her bundle of friends, who are already dancing to the music.
