“I don’t want to talk about Nate and sex. If you weren’t with Nate, we could talk about sex.”
She laughed as she shook her head. “It only happened a couple of times. It was all right—good, I guess—but it was nothing like it is with your brother—really passionate and intense. Nate and I definitely have a connection.”
Molly held up her hand. “Stop right there. That’s enough.” She narrowed her eyes. “You’re good, by the way—subtly sneaky. Telling me to mind my own business by grossing me out.”
If it wasn’t one Carter always making her laugh, it was the other. “I wasn’t telling you to mind your own business—just the truth. You and me, we’re friends. It’s just weird talking about being in bed with someone else when the only man I want is Nate.”
“Aw. Although that’s entirely sick, it’s also super sweet.” Molly gave her another squeeze. “Go save the day, ordinary, non-famous island girl. Help Jillian with her project.”
Callie puffed up her chest. “I’ll do my best.”
They both laughed as Callie stepped back and headed around the counter. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Bye.”
Callie put on her coat and opened the door, still chuckling as she got into the truck and drove off. Technically she could walk to the library. It was only three or four blocks away, but the truck was here and the clouds were threatening more rain, which seemed to be an everyday thing now. The Carter Island brochures had forgotten to mention that she would have a constant late-fall cloud cover to look forward to along with her spectacular seafood dinners and long walks on the beach. She turned right as her cell phone started ringing. Reaching for her back pocket, she grabbed it. “Hello?”
“Hey, it’s Gwen.”
She smiled. “Hi. How are you?”
“Growing bigger every day.”
“That’s a good thing. That means Baby’s healthy.”
“When you put it that way, it’s a great thing. The fact that I’m wearing flip-flops today because I couldn’t fit my feet into my Jimmy Choos is another.”
Callie chuckled. “Not too much longer and you’ll get back into your pretty shoes.”
“I can hope.”
“You will.” She turned down Atlantic Avenue. “So, what’s going on?”
“What’s going on is I have a closet full of clothes with your name written all over them. I went on a shopping spree before I realized I was preggers, and some of this stuff has got to go. Since Molly hasn’t caught on to the idea of wearing something other than Levis and Carter Island Deli and Bakery T-shirts, I thought I’d see if you want them.”
“But what about you?”
“I have months to go before I can wear any of that stuff. I figure one of us should look stunning right now.”
“Aw, you are stunning. You Carters wear your genes well.”
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.” She pulled into a spot at the library next to a late-model Cadillac. “I just got to the library. I’m helping Jillian with a project for Grandpa Morris’s retirement party, but I can come by after that.”
“Poor Jillian. She’s so sweet. She’s been our librarian since I was a little girl. Her hands are a mess. She has rheumatoid arthritis.”
Callie got out and shut the door. “I’ll see what I can do to help her out—probably about an hour. Does that work?”
“Sure. I took a half day so it’s just me. Whenever is fine.”
She heard the slight change in Gwen’s tone—the unhappiness in her voice. “Is Liam out of town again?”
“Unfortunately, yes. Twice this month already. I guess that’s what happens when you marry a crazy busy sales executive.”
“Nate and I are going to the movies tonight. Do you want to come with us?”
“No, thanks. Baby and I are going to bed early. Sleeping is one of our most favorite things to do right now.”
