“We don’t know the circumstances. We have no idea why they did what they did. She was young—”

She shook her head again. “That’s no excuse.”

He closed the distance between them. “I’m hoping everything will make more sense once we get this all figured out.” He kissed her. “I’m sorry, Callie.” He kissed her again. “I hate telling you things that I know are going to hurt you.”

“It’s not your fault.” She locked her arms around his waist and rested her head on his shoulder. “I know how hard it is on you when you have to tell me something you know I’m not going to like hearing.”

“It’s not on my top one hundred list of things I like to do.” He slid his fingers through her hair. “What do you say we let the dishes soak and you come sit down with me? We can tuck the past away for a little while, because I have no idea how long the quiet’s going to last tonight.”

“I’m sorry this is so hard right now.” She eased back enough to hold his gaze. “I love you.”

“I love you too.” He squeezed her tight and took her hand. “Come on.” They sat down, snuggling up on the couch, and he groaned as he nestled his head on the comfy cushion. “When was the last time we managed this?”

She lay back against him, settling her head on his chest. “It’s been a while.”

He reached for the remote. “How about a movie?”

“Sure.”

He turned on the screen and breathed in Callie as they searched through their options. “You pick.”

“How about Crazy, Stupid, Love? Right there on channel seventy-four.”

“Yeah, sure.” He selected Callie’s choice and pulled the blanket off the back cushion, covering them as the movie began.

Callie laced their fingers, settling their hands on her stomach.

Minutes passed and somehow he’d already lost the thread of what was going on as his eyes grew heavy. Sleep tempted him, coaxing him to let his eyes close once more. Within seconds, he was out cold, relaxed with Callie in his arms.
