The newly dubbed Winston rested his chin on Nate’s forearm.

“Aw.” Callie moved closer to the dog. “I’m already in love.”

Nate’s hand paused midstroke on the pup. “I’m going to try not to be offended. I had to work really damn hard to get a first date with you. Now you’re in the room with this guy for less than ten minutes and it’s love.”

She laughed again, thrilled that Nate seemed more himself today. “Doggy love is less complicated.” She stroked their dog’s soft golden ears. “Isn’t that right, Winston?”

“We’ll go with that.” Nate grinned and winked. “I’ll let Michelle know she’s got one less mouth to feed tonight and take care of any paperwork we need to fill out.”

“Okay.” Callie stayed close to her new friend as Nate walked back into the main part of the building. “This is going to be great. You’ll see. We’re going to bring you home and take such good care of you. While Nate’s at work today, you and I are going to get everything you’re going to need. And maybe Roxanne can squeeze you in over at the doggy spa for a little pampering session.”

A few minutes later, Nate came back with a brand new royal blue collar and leash. “I kind of liked this one for him.”

Her heart melted as she stared at the man she adored. Of course he would take the time to pick out just the right color for their new family member. “Blue’s one of my favorites.”

“Michelle says they think he’s four—maybe five. Denny brought him in during the last couple weeks of the season. He was wandering around down by the docks.”

Callie frowned. “Poor guy.”

Nate crouched down again and put the collar on Winston. “What do you say we hit the road?” He attached the leash to the collar. “We could probably take a walk on the beach—let him enjoy his newfound freedom before I head to the station.”

She stood and hooked her arm through Nate’s as Winston gained his feet. “Sounds perfect.”

“Come on, buddy. Let’s spring you from this joint.”

Callie walked down the hall with Nate and their new dog. Last night they’d lived through their own rendition of hell, but today, things were looking a lot better.
