When I told Mia about meeting Faye and what she said about Reggie taking the scenic route to happiness, Mia said Yeah, right. The scenic route with a broken GPS that keeps rerouting him in circles.

“That sounds promising,” I say.

“It always sounds promising until he realizes it does,” she says exasperatedly. “Don’t be late tonight. Jared’s acting cool about it, but the press has been hyping up the opening for weeks, and I know he’s got to be freaking out.”

“No surprise there,” I say as I reach my floor. “Having good hair and overthinking like it’s a competitive sport is basically our family brand. Have fun with Reggie. Use a condom.”

“I said a drink.”

“Uh-huh. The last time you guys went for a drink, you were mooning for a week.”

“Shut up,” Mia says.

“Let me be your cautionary tale. Protection.” I sing that last word.

“Goodbye, brat.”

I push my apartment door open and step inside, still smiling from my conversation with Mia. I slip off my heels, calculating how much time I have before Fitz arrives, when I hear a man’s muffled voice.

I freeze, panic flaring in my chest. I look toward the living room. Empty. The kitchen. Empty. I shoot a look down the hall, and my pulse spikes. My bedroom door is closed.

I definitely didn’t leave it closed.

The male voice rings out again, lower this time, followed by a shuffling noise.

I turn to leave, and my gaze catches on Jace’s keys on the narrow table beside the door, the Silver-Stone emblem he’s used forever glinting like a bad joke.

Relief rushes through me so fast, my knees nearly give out. I press a hand to my chest, as my brother’s deep voice hits me as clear as day, louder than before. “That’s it. Good. A little harder.”

My hands fist, and I stalk down the hall. “Jace, I swear to God, if you and Dixie are having sex in my bed, I’m going to kill you both!”

The bedroom door swings open, and four sets of amused eyes meet mine as Fitz, Wells, Grant, and Jace form a human barrier to the bedroom.

“Wow,” Wells says, looking strangely impressed. “No hesitation at all. Straight to homicide.”

“I told you she doesn’t like people fucking with her things,” Jace said.

I glower at him and cross my arms. “What are all of you doing in my bedroom?”

“Don’t answer,” Grant says conspiratorially. “She already threatened murder once.”

A smile breaks across Fitz’s face. “Sorry, wild girl. They’re helping me with a surprise for you.”

“A surprise? In my bedroom?” Oh my God, this guy. “What are you dorks up to?”

Fitz steps forward and says, “I know how worried you were about fitting baby furniture in here, so I had Grant build a few things, and the guys are helping us put them together.”

My heart stumbles. “Fitz,” I say softly. “That’s…annoyingly sweet and worth the heart attack of thinking I was being robbed.”

“I think someone’s going to be having sex in this room soon,” Wells says.

The Silvers laugh, but Jace just shakes his head and says, “I don’t need to hear that about my sister.”

Fitz holds out his hand, beckoning me.

As I take it, he looks at the guys and says, “Move aside.”

They file into the hall, clearing the way for me to see into the bedroom. My mattress is leaning against a wall, and on the floor is an elevated platform base with drawers, mostly put together. That on its own is incredible, but then I step closer, and my breath catches.
