“Not me. I could never do anything like that first scene,” Leah said.
“You cannot tell me you wouldn’t let Tank bend you over the kitchen counter and do you from behind,” Marly said.
Leah blushed a red streak. “I meant I couldn’t do it in the same situation as in the book, where it would have been the first time with him. I couldn’t have done that, even with Tank. But now?” She grinned.
“Leah’s naughty side likes to play,” Evie said.
“Why wouldn’t I like getting sexy with my man?” Leah sat back in her seat. “He’s scrumptious and insanely good at everything naughty. But we have three kids, so counter sex is not an option.”
“Can you imagine Rosie? Papa Tank! What are you doing to Mama?” Madigan said in a high-pitched voice.
“Are you playing twain?” Starr chimed in using a childlike voice.
“And Junie?” Chloe added. “Rosie! Can’t you see they’re dancing?”
Everyone roared with laughter, even Leah.
“Our girls are built-in entertainment and built-in birth control,” Leah said.
“I’ll happily babysit so you and Tank can get your freak on,” Evie offered. “Just bring them over to my place. But call first, because I might be busy.” She smirked.
“Who are you getting busy with?” Madigan asked excitedly.
“None of you can say a word about this to anyone,” Evie warned.
“Of course! Girl code enacted,” Madigan said. “What’s said in the book club stays in the book club.” The others agreed.
Evie looked at Emerson. “You can’t mention this to Baz.”
Oh God. What am I getting myself into? “Okay, I won’t.”
Evie’s smile grew so big, Emerson was a little excited to hear what was going on. “Quinton and I have been hooking up.”
Madigan squealed, and everyone else’s jaws dropped, except Marly’s.
“Get it, girl,” Marly said. “That man is fine.”
“How long has this been going on?” Steph asked. “You know Baz is going to kill you.”
“It’s recent, and I don’t know if it will go anywhere, although I hope it does,” Evie admitted. “But that’s why I don’t want Baz to know. I don’t want to get Quinton in trouble and start any bad blood between them if it’s going to fizzle out.”
The girls were exchanging nervous glances.
All Emerson could think about was how hurt Baz had been when the girl he’d dated in college didn’t trust him enough to talk to him. She wished she hadn’t promised not to say anything. “I think you should tell him.”
“I will,” Evie said. “I just want to get a handle on what this is between me and Quinton before I do. There’s a lot at stake.”
“I understand, but please don’t wait too long. I think that would hurt him.”
“I won’t. I promise,” Evie said.
Emerson breathed a little easier, but then she realized all eyes were on her.
“So…you and Baz?” Starr prodded.
“Oh…um…” She glanced around the table, wondering who else besides Starr and Madigan knew about them. Her gaze lingered on Evie, wondering if Baz had said anything to her.
Evie’s eyes widened. “I hope you’re not holding back because of me. This is your safe space. The girl code is a given here.”
