“Mm-hm. What were you up to tonight?”
He didn’t want to pretend he felt nothing for her, when he felt more than he had in as long as he could remember. He’d probably get struck by lightning, but he had to admit the truth, even if they couldn’t take it anywhere. He sat up and leaned his elbows on his knees. “Honestly? I was thinking about you.”
She went quiet.
He gritted his teeth against her extended silence. “Sorry, Sut. I probably shouldn’t have admitted that.”
“It’s not that,” she said softly. “I was going to read tonight, but I couldn’t stop thinking about you. That’s why I went for a walk. To clear my head.”
This was fucking torture. “How’s that going for you?”
“Not great.”
The mix of sadness and annoyance in her voice cut him to his core. “I know this sucks. But we’re doing the right thing.”
“I know. What I don’t get is why you of all people?”
“Hey, that’s not very nice.”
“You know what I mean. There are millions of men in the world. Why do I have to get hung up on my boss?”
“Just look at the long list of pros on your pros and cons list.”
“You mean the two items on that side, both of which are sexual?”
“Two. Twenty. Same-same.”
She snort-laughed, which made him laugh.
“I’ve been watching the videos we made of us on my personal camera. We had a lot of fun together.”
“Please tell me you deleted the dirty ones.”
He could lie, but he wouldn’t lie to her. “Not yet.”
“Flynn. You promised you would,” she said with a hint of amusement and irritation.
“I will. I just haven’t gotten that far. I was watching the PG-rated clips of you scowling at me for every little thing.”
“I’m sure you deserved it.”
“Probably.”
“Definitely,” she challenged.
He scrubbed a hand down his face, wishing she were there with him. “I’d ask if you want to come watch with me and decide for yourself, but while we might start out watching the videos, I think we’d end up outdoing them.”
“Flynn…”
Her breathy plea nearly had him changing his mind. “I think we’d better get off the phone.”
“Yeah,” she said just above a whisper.
“It was nice talking to you, Steele.”
“You too, Braden.”
