Karen looked between the two of them. “At least now you’re smiling when you give each other a hard time. Can I take that as a win and assume things will be less contentious between you two? Or shall we move this into my office?”

“We’re good,” Flynn said at the same time Sutton said, “Take it as a win.”

“Great. I look forward to seeing that footage. I’ll let you get back to work, and we’ll catch up at the team meeting on Friday.”

As Karen walked away, Sutton shoved Flynn, whispering, “Riding you? Really?”

“What’s wrong with that?”

“You know damn well what’s wrong with it,” she whispered. “You might as well have said that I like to fuck you.” She mouthed the word fuck.

Amusement rose in his eyes. “Ms. Steele, do we need to revisit the definition of appropriate workplace conversation?”

She narrowed her eyes. “I should’ve put a tarantula in your underwear when I had the chance.”

Chapter Eighteen

BY WEDNESDAY NIGHT Flynn was edgy as shit. Keeping things professional around Sutton was proving to be more difficult than he’d anticipated. Innuendos slipped out without warning, and while she rolled with them, her ever-ready snark and confidence only made him want more. He missed their open camaraderie, their intimate conversations, inside jokes, and flirtatiousness.

Hell, he missed her.

He thought watching the videos he’d taken of them on his personal video camera would ease those unfamiliar feelings, but it was only making it worse, bringing back the fun they’d had and the adorable way she scowled at him when he annoyed her. He watched her leg bobbing as she wrote in her journal by the waterfall in that torturous pink-and-white bikini. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d wanted any kind of reminders of a woman after they’d been together, but with Sutton, he’d gathered them like a squirrel hoarding nuts for the winter.

His phone rang, and he snagged it from the coffee table, seeing his grandfather’s image on the screen. Flynn shared his height and hair color, though his grandfather had lost a couple of inches as he’d aged, and his hair was now snow white and thinning on top. He still wore it collar length and slicked back and kept his beard trim.

Flynn had caught up with the rest of his family, but he and his grandfather had been playing phone tag. Hitting pause on the video, he answered on speakerphone. “Hey, old man.”

“Hey, whippersnapper. How’s my boy?” His grandfather’s voice had always been as rough as sandpaper, with a warmth all its own. Hearing it now took the edge off Flynn’s nerves.

“You do remember that I’ll be thirty-four soon, right?”

“Yeah, yeah. You’ll always be my curious boy. How’re you doing?”

“Hanging in there. What’s kept you so busy?”

“A little of this. A little of that.”

Flynn grinned. “Why are you so evasive lately? What’re you keeping from me?”

“I can’t say, but you’ll be the first to know when I can.”

“Does Gram know?”

“Loose Lips Lucy? Heck no.”

“I heard that.” His grandmother’s voice rang out in the background. “Miss you, Flynny.”

Flynn laughed. “Tell Gram I miss her, too.”

“Flynn said he misses you almost as much as he misses me,” he said loudly, then snickered.

“You’re a troublemaker.”

“I’ve got to stay on her good side. She’s making shortbread cookies for our flight tomorrow. I don’t want her withholding my goodies.”

“I can still hear you,” his grandmother said.

“Busted. Where are you headed?”
