“No, thanks. I left my car here.”

Text me when you get home so I know you’re home safe hung from the tip of his tongue. Gritting his teeth against the unfamiliar urge, he nodded curtly, said, “See you Tuesday, Steele,” and got the hell out of there.

Chapter Fifteen

AS WAKEFULNESS CREPT in, Flynn fought against it, rolling over and reaching for Sutton. His hand landed on an empty space, and his eyes flew open. “Sut—” His rustic three-bedroom cabin came into focus, and his groggy brain remembered they were back in New York. Fuck. He scrubbed a hand down his face, glancing at the clock as he threw his legs over the side of the bed and sat up. 2:07 a.m. He must’ve gone out like a light, because he’d showered and lain down to read, but his book was still on the nightstand.

He grabbed his phone as he climbed from his bed and opened the doors to the deck. A cool breeze swept over his bare chest. His cabin was situated on several private lakefront acres in the mountains just outside Port Hudson. He hated feeling penned in, so he’d had accordion-style doors made that ran the length of the walls for the master bedroom and living room, opening to decks that cantilevered over the water.

As he stepped outside, the gentle sounds of the water took him back to the waterfall, bringing images of Sutton, naked and writhing against him. His dick jerked with the memory.

He inhaled the crisp mountain air and glowered down at the recently horny body part. “That’s not happening.” He wondered what Sutton was doing. Sleeping? Journaling? Reading?

Thinking about me?

Dude, get a grip.

They’d opened Pandora’s box. He walked to the far side of the deck, sat on the top step that led to a walkway connecting the deck to the boathouse, and powered up his phone. He’d sent his family a group text when he’d gotten home—Back home safe and sound. Going to crash—and now their responses rolled in.

Dad: Glad you’re safe, son. Call us when you’re settled and rested.

Clay: Good thing I got my harem out of your cabin this morning.

Mom: Clay! Love you, Flynn. I can’t wait to hear about your trip.

Seth: Did Sutton make it back, too?

Noah: Maybe Sutton offed Flynn and she sent that text from his phone to throw us off.

Victory: Dibs on his cabin!

Noah: You’d have to leave the city to enjoy it, Vic.

Seth: Guess Vic didn’t read Clay’s message.

Victory: Ew. Scratch that.

Seth and Noah sent laughing emojis.

Clay sent a devil emoji.

He smiled at their banter. It was too late to respond to any of them except Seth, who was a night owl. He opened a new message to his oldest brother, thumbing out, You up?

His phone rang, and Seth’s name appeared on the screen. Flynn answered on speaker. “Hey, bro. How’s it going?”

“Not bad. I figured you’d be dead on your feet.”

“I crashed for a few hours, but you know I’m not much of a sleeper.”

“Right. How was your camping trip?”

He smiled at Seth’s minimization of their trip. “Different than expected.”

“No shit. I still can’t believe Karen saddled you with that last-minute change. Did you and Sutton play nice? How’d you make out?”

“Prime choice of words, asshole.” Seth had been giving him shit about Sutton since she’d first started working for him.

Seth’s low laugh came through the phone. “I know you were hell-bent on getting her fired, but despite your constant denial, I swear there’s always been more to it.”
