“In the rowboat was a girl, alone and scared, desperate for safety,” Daphne added. “She was drawn to the island.”

“I’m next,” Jules said excitedly. “When she reached shore, she found a beautiful little town with colorful shops and heard lively music coming out of a house with a red door.”

“That was very specific, Pix,” Grant said.

Jules wiggled her shoulders. “I like red. It’s a happy color. Take your turn.”

Grant said, “She peered through the windows and saw people dancing the jig.”

Noah jumped right in. “But it wasn’t the dancing people that caught her attention—”

“It was the creepy doll hanging from a noose in the corner of the room,” Jock called out, and everyone cracked up.

“Nice, Jock,” Sutton said sarcastically.

“But she was even more fascinated by the boy sitting across the room drawing a map,” Noah added.

“She wanted to know where that map led to,” Indi added.

“So she burst through the door and charged across the room,” Archer said.

“Is her name Archer?” Indi bumped him with her shoulder, and everyone laughed.

“It’s your turn, Gram,” Leni said.

“Hold your horses. I’ve got to think,” her grandmother said. “I’ve got it. The boy looked up at her and said, I’ve been waiting for you.”

“Good one, Gram,” Leni praised. “The girl said, How did you know I was coming?”

“And he said, It was written in the stars before the storm,” Raz added.

“My turn!” Joey bounced on Levi’s lap. “Then the boy said, I was afraid you wouldn’t come.” She patted Levi’s leg. “Your turn, Daddy.”

“And the girl said, Maybe I’ve been waiting for you my whole life, too.”

“Even the girls in made-up stories are challenging?” Flynn asked.

“They’re the best kind,” his grandfather said.

“It’s Tara’s turn,” Joey announced.

Tara said, “So the boy said, I made us a treasure map. Are you ready for an adventure?”

“And the girl said, I was born ready,” her mother added.

Sutton watched her father’s brow knit in contemplation for a long moment before he took his turn. “The boy opened the window, and they climbed out and ran through the rain all the way back to town.”

Noah jumped in with, “But first they took a detour through the woods, where they swung from branches, and the boy wrestled an anaconda to save the girl.”

Sutton and Flynn laughed.

“And when they got back to town,” Seth said, “they were starving, so they went into a deli, where they found a pig making a ham sandwich.”

“Every single time,” his father said with a shake of his head.

“You know you love the pig, Dad,” Seth insisted. “Take your turn and quit complaining.”

“The pig made them ham and pickle sandwiches, which they devoured, and with full bellies, they ran back outside,” his father said. “The rain had stopped, and at the end of the road, they saw a rainforest.”
