The curtain opened, and his grandparents walked in, eyes clouded with worry, brows furrowed. Tears sprang from his grandmother’s eyes as she carefully put her arms around both of them. “Thank goodness you’re both okay.”

“We’re okay, Gram.” Flynn looked over his grandmother’s shoulder at his grandfather. His jaw was tight, blue-gray eyes struggling not to water.

“It took me a frigging hour and a half of bitching to get them to let us back here,” his grandfather said.

“We’re here now, Bradshaw. That’s what matters.” His grandmother put her soft hands on Flynn’s and Sutton’s faces, her gaze moving between them. “We needed to see for ourselves that you two were okay. Sutton, honey, it’s nice to finally meet you. But next time maybe don’t make quite an entrance.”

Sutton smiled and swiped at her tears. “I’ll try not to.”

“Why do you always gotta try to outdo me, boy?” His grandfather’s voice was thick with emotion as he stepped forward. “I get a story, and you try to beat me into the evening news.”

“I learned from the best, old man.”

“Showing off for your girl, no doubt.” He winked at Sutton. “Not that I blame you. She’s prettier than you are, Flynn.”

Flynn took Sutton’s hand again. “Sutton, meet my grandparents, Bradshaw and Lara Braden.”

“It’s nice to finally meet you both.”

“I’ve been itching to meet you, sweetheart,” his grandfather said. “You’ve had this boy tied up in knots for a long time. I have to admit, I never thought coupledom would settle him down, because I don’t believe in settling, but I thought it might quiet things for a bit. I can see I was wrong. That’s two life-threatening situations you two have gotten yourselves into in under as many months. I’m not a cat with nine lives, you know. I’m an old man, and these near heart attacks add up.”

“We’ll try to keep them to a minimum,” she promised.

“Pfft.” His grandfather waved a hand dismissively. “If you think I believe you, then you must think I don’t know my grandson. He would never be with a woman who wasn’t just as much of an adventure seeker as he is.” His gaze moved to Gulliver’s Travels on the bed beside Flynn. “I told you that book was lucky.”

“You have no idea how lucky, Gramps. If not for the book, Sutton wouldn’t be sitting here right now.” She definitely had an angel watching over her. The book had somehow remained in place when the plane dropped, protecting her when the branch that had pinned him and had been aiming at her face had snapped.

The curtain opened, and the nurse walked in, eyeing his grandparents. “I guess I didn’t get the invitation to the party.”

“Are you going to spring these two from this joint?” his grandfather asked.

“Yes, sir,” the nurse said. “Are you taking care of them tonight?”

“Yes, we are,” his grandmother said.

The nurse told them what to watch for and how to care for their injuries. “They should take it easy for a while.”

“We’ll rest tonight, but we need to record a show tomorrow,” Sutton said.

Flynn and his grandfather exchanged a knowing look, and Flynn couldn’t hold back a chuckle. He grabbed his ribs, wincing.

“Then I guess that’s what we’re going to do,” his grandfather said.

The nurse frowned. “The doctor advised—”

“Save your breath, honey,” his grandmother said. “I’ve been trying to reason with them for years.”

The nurse gave them their discharge papers and said she’d come back with crutches for Flynn.

“Oh, honey, you’re so busy. I’ll come with you and grab those crutches so you can help other patients.” His grandmother followed the nurse out.

“I’ll bring the car around so you don’t have to hobble too far.” His grandfather opened the curtain and glanced over his shoulder, setting a loving gaze on Flynn. “Love you, boy.”

“Tell me when y—” Flynn stopped himself from finishing that sentence, Archer’s words echoing in his head. Don’t assume he’ll always be there. “You know what? I love you too, old man.”

“I know you do, kid.” He smiled at Sutton. “I might not know you one on one yet, but I know you through my grandson’s heart, which means I love you too, Sutton.”

Tears welled in her eyes. “I feel the same.”
