She was lonely without him, too, and it had only been a day.
Sutton: I miss you, too. How did it go with Ray?
Flynn: Great. The trailers are fantastic. I can’t wait for you to see them.
Flynn: How is your night? What’s GNN’s newest star doing to celebrate?
Sutton: Spending the evening with a guy who’s a lot like you. He’s a survivalist but a bit younger.
Flynn: Is he someone you’ll be working with?
Her heart squeezed, because she wanted him to be.
She looked at Flynn’s frozen image on her laptop screen. She’d paused the show when he was holding a pencil-thin speckled bush snake that was wound between his fingers and around his wrist. His hair was a mess, his face was dirty, and he sported a scruffy beard and mustache, but his bright eyes lit up the screen.
She took a picture of the screen and sent it to him.
Flynn: I can’t believe you’re watching that.
Sutton: I love seeing you at that age. You were so brave. I can see why you were so popular. She added a hot-faced emoji.
Sutton: But you’re even better looking now.
Flynn: Have you always had a thing for older men?
Sutton: No. It was a taste I acquired in the rainforest.
Flynn sent a devil emoji.
Sutton: I know that show changed your life and not all for the better, so if it bothers you, I’ll stop watching. But I like seeing who you were back then.
Flynn: It’s fine.
Flynn: That show changed me, not just my life, but it also put me on a path that led to us. That makes thinking about that time a little less painful.
She wondered if he had any idea how much knowing that meant to her. She sent three smiling emojis surrounded by hearts.
Flynn: I’m beat, babe. I’ve got to get some sleep. I have an early meeting with Karen and Aubrey.
Sutton: Is everything okay?
Flynn: Yeah. Just program stuff. Nothing to worry about. See you tomorrow night? My place?
Sutton: Definitely. I can’t wait. She added a kissing emoji.
She sat back against the pillows, marveling how just texting with Flynn calmed her as much as being near the water did. She pulled her laptop closer and pushed play on the show, smiling to herself as she watched Flynn, wishing she’d known him then and that they’d had all those difficult years together. She didn’t think she’d have pushed him to take those jobs he didn’t want. She would have wanted him to be happy. Would he have still gone into hiding? Would he have wanted her to? If he had, would she have dropped out of school to go with him?
Her brain told her nothing would have stopped her from completing that goal, but her heart wasn’t so sure.
A notification from her personal email account popped up. She paused the show and opened the program, surprised to see an email from Flynn.
Steele,
Congratulations on the job offer. I knew you’d nail it. Now I can say I knew you when…
Braden
There was a video attached to the email. She opened it and hit play.
