Augustus looked from Rory to Connor.
“We know,” they said in unison. “We stay on her good side.”
Kiera looked up at her mate. “They’re kidding, right?”
Hunter laughed nervously, then looked over to Darian. “Ready to go to Boston?”
Augustus and Connor stood.
“Hunter?” Kiera asked again.
He pushed his chair back and stood, holding out his hand. “Boston Cream Pie awaits.”
She took his hand and squeezed it hard. He winced slightly. “You’ll tell me that story later, won’t you?”
“Sure,” he agreed.
Meryn turned to Darian. “Whatever you get Amelia, can you buy an extra for me? I’ve never had Boston Cream Pie before.”
“Of course, darling. Lobster as well?”
“Send those down to Mom. I have a feeling Council stuff will be upsetting Dad in the foreseeable future, she’ll want to serve lobster and his favorite cake.”
“I’ll deliver it myself.”
Darian pointed to the living room. “Ready when you are.”
Kiera grabbed her suitcase from the doorway and darted into the downstairs bathroom. She changed into the only suit she owned. A serviceable black jacket and pant set that she had used repeatedly for interviews. Knowing the men were waiting she forwent make up and simply put her hair up in a messy bun. After swapping her sneakers for flats, she shoved her clothes in the suitcase, which she wheeled into the hallway. She smiled at the guys.
“Ready.”
Chapter Nine
“Summoned a dark entity?” she demanded when they stepped through the portal.
They were now standing in a small studio apartment in the middle of downtown Boston.
Darian held up his hands. “The fae she condemned deserved what they got.” He went into more detail as to what happened in the Eirson home.
Kiera’s felt her insides turn ice cold. “How could anyone do such things?”
Hunter rubbed her back. “It is because they had turned away from the light so much, that Meryn’s solution was the only one that worked.”
Darian smiled sadly. “We’re moving past that now.”
“She’s so little,” Connor murmured.
They walked down the single flight of stairs and into the late summer weather.
This time Darian’s smile was bright when he turned back to look at her. “There is depth to Meryn we’re still discovering.” He looked around. “Whenever you’re ready to leave, call me. We can meet here. I have some shopping to do.”
After he walked away, Hunter turned to her. “You ready?”
She shook her head. “Not really. It still doesn’t seem real.”
Augustus stepped up next to Hunter. “We’ll be with you every step of the way.”
She took a deep breath, and they walked three blocks down toward the corporate district. They stopped in front of a large glass and chrome skyscraper. Hunter held the door as they walked inside and up to the reception desk, their shoes created a rhythmic staccato on the polished granite floor. Seeing them approach, the receptionist straightened. “Can I help you?”
