He kisses me again.

Chapter 4 — Holt

The call comes at three in the afternoon.

I'm under a bike that's been leaking oil since 2018, lying on my back on the creeper with my arms stretched overhead trying to get the drain plug to cooperate.

My phone buzzes in my pocket and I ignore it the first time because I'm almost done and stopping now means starting over.

It buzzes again.

I roll out from under the bike and pull the phone out. Cain's name on the screen.

"Yeah."

"We found it."

I stand up. Wipe my hands on the rag hanging from my belt. Ray is across the shop working on a carburetor rebuild and he glances up when he hears my tone change.

"Where?"

"Industrial park off Route 9. End of Mercer Road. Warehouse property, supposed to be abandoned."

"How close to town?"

There's a pause. Just long enough that I know the answer before he says it.

"Half mile from the elementary school."

My hands stop moving. The rag drops to the floor. "Say that again."

"Half mile from Bloomfield Elementary. Marsh confirmed product on site this morning. They've been staging there minimum two weeks, maybe longer."

Half a mile from where Louis goes every day. Where Katherine teaches. Where two hundred children sit in classrooms five days a week thinking they're safe.

"How much product?"

"Enough that it's not just staging. They're distributing from there."

I look at the bike I was just working on. The tools spread across the workbench. The ordinary afternoon that just became something else.

"When do we move?"

"Ninety minutes. Clint wants everyone at the clubhouse by four-thirty."

"I'll be there."

I hang up and stand there for ten seconds just breathing. Ray has stopped working entirely now and is watching me.

"Club business," I say.

"The thing you've been tracking."

"Yeah."

"How bad?"

"Bad enough."
