Finn saw it on the second replay. "If I release that before he goes—"

"He has separation," Vale said.

"And if you don't?" Rowan asked.

"Then it looks exactly like this."

The clip continued. Finn's pass arrived late. Nolan closed the space. The puck struck Luca's back skate and went harmlessly to the corner.

Vale paused. "The decision and the outcome are not the same thing. Yesterday Bennett made a bad team decision and scored. Here he identified an opening and the group was late."

Luca's boot stopped moving.

Rowan felt his attention without looking over.

Vale faced him. "How do we make that readable?"

By telling Luca to hold the route.

The answer arrived clean and immediate. It would preserve their spacing. It would also erase the opening on the screen.

Rowan studied the frozen players.

"You give Finn an earlier trigger," he said. "If Bennett sees the turn, he calls it before he leaves. Center stays under the puck in case the pass dies."

Vale nodded. "Risk with support."

"Structure," Rowan said.

"Structure that moves."

Vale played the route once more at full speed. Without the pause and the lines drawn over the image, the opening lasted less than a second.

"The call has to be simple," Nolan said from the back. "If I'm defending it, I don't need Bennett giving a weather report before he goes."

"One word," Finn agreed.

Luca leaned forward, forearms on his thighs. "Turn."

Several players looked at him.

"The defenseman's feet," he said. "If I see him turn before the puck moves, I call it."

Rowan tested the word against the sequence. Short enough to travel through crowd noise. Specific enough that Finn would know Luca was changing the route, not asking for the puck.

"Center stays beneath it," Rowan said. "If the call comes and the pass is not there, we keep possession."

Vale nodded. "Run it this afternoon. Both sides. I want to know whether the language survives pressure."

The adjustment belonged to the whole line now. Luca's instinct had entered the system without being removed from him.

Rowan should have experienced that as resolution.

Instead, he was aware of Luca sitting very still two seats away.

The distinction should not have irritated him.

It did.
