Little does she know, I would kill every fucking person on the planet if she asked me to. There’s no line I won’t cross, no one I won’t take out, if it means making her smile.
CHAPTER SIXTY-THREE
CHLOE
NOW
Once I’ve done my business, I get to the most important part of a road trip.
Snacks.
There are a few people milling around as I browse the aisles, picking out my favorite candy and pork rinds for Damon. I swipe a candy bar for Ronan, hoping it’s still his go-to after all these years, and some jerky for Kingston before glancing toward the car.
What does Ryker like?
It hits me that I don’t know him that well, and yet my heart feels like I’ve known him my whole life, as if he’s always been a part of me, even before I knew he existed.
Shaking off the ridiculous thought, I settle for some extra jerky for him and move to the fridges. I need some caffeine, but it’s too warm in the car being pressed between Ryker and Ronan for a hot coffee.
I’m browsing the energy drinks when I feel a hard body press against my back, and a smile tugs at my lips. Of course one of them followed me in here. I don’t think the two of them have ever heard of personal space, and if I’m honest, I don’t mind it.
“Get everything you need, Duchess?” Damon asks against the shell of my ear, sending my heart into overdrive.
Biting down on the inside of my cheek, I force a breath into my lungs. “Just getting a drink, and I’ll be ready,” I reply, hating how my voice trembles at his proximity.
His hands move to rest on my hips, holding me in place so I can’t go anywhere. “Go on then.”
I swallow heavily, because there’s no way I can open the door without pressing myself against his front, and although we’ve found some common ground, I know better than to let myself trust Damon.
He wouldn’t hesitate to betray me if it meant he finally got his throne.
I meet his heated gaze in our reflection, only making my heart kick up another notch.
Why am I so affected by someone who hates me so much?
Reaching for the handle with my free arm, I tug the door open, but as suspected, it’s not enough space to get my hand inside.
Playing into his game, I shuffle back until I’m pressed hard against his chest and the evidence of his need is pressed to my ass.
Knowing he’s not unaffected by me brings the ghost of a smile to my lips as a plan starts to form.
I spot a flavor I’ve tried a couple of times on a lower shelf and tilt my hips as I lean into the fridge to slide it out of its place, pressing my ass into his hardness in the process.
He grunts as the hands on my hips tighten almost to the point of pain.
Glancing over my shoulder with what I hope is an innocent expression, I ask, “You want anything?”
He chuckles. “Oh, I want everything, Duchess. But I don’t think you’re ready for what I want.”
Shrugging, I allow the door to swing closed and turn in his arms, meeting the fire in his usually cold blue eyes. “I guess you don’t know me as well as you think you do, then.”
I’m gone before he has a chance to reach for me, and I can’t help but feel a little smug.
Damon can toy with me all he wants, but I’m just going to toy right back until he snaps.
Back at the car, I hand everyone’s snacks out while we wait for Ryker and Ronan to return from their own restroom runs.
Damon’s back in the passenger seat with his arms crossed over his chest and something between irritation and need radiating off him in waves.
