"The distinction is you standing on a roof for four hours."
"With a very good view."
This time she does laugh. Brief, real, the laugh that comes out when a thing is both accurate and slightly absurd. I note it and file it the way I file everything about her, into the store of true things about Raven I've been keeping for twenty-three years.
She tells me what the inside felt like.
Not all of it. There are things she still hasn't put words to — I can tell by the quality of her pauses, the places where she finds the words and the places where she finds approximately the words and takes them anyway, because something is better than nothing. I take all of it. The anger banked and held exact. The moment in the stairwell. The south approach, and Anipe, and the eight inches.
"Eight inches," I say.
"Eight inches. I've thought about it."
"And?"
"And I judged it right and moved right and the outcome was right." She says it with the evenness of a woman who has done the arithmetic at length and made her peace with the answer. "I've also accepted that correct and comfortable aren't the same thing."
"No," I say. "They're not."
We fly in silence a while. The academy is still two hours ahead, hidden behind the range.
"The gate," she says. Not a question.
I know what she's asking. I've been waiting for it since the Purge ended.
"When you walked through," I say, "I couldn't move for a second."
She looks at me. We're close enough in the air that I can see her face clearly, the look of Raven hearing something she already knew said out loud for the first time.
"I knew you'd be all right. I'd known it the whole time. Knowing and seeing aren't the same, and when I saw you come through that gate, the seeing landed differently than the knowing ever had. One second. Then I moved."
"Twenty-three years," she says quietly.
"Twenty-three years of knowing what you are. It still landed."
She's quiet a long moment. Then she reaches across the gap between us.
I take her hand.
Flying while holding hands is not a thing most dragons do. You have to adjust the wing angle and the way you carry your height, and the grip drags at the inside edge and has to be worked against. We've done it exactly once before, in the early months of the bond, when we were still learning the practical business of each other. We worked out how then, and we both still remember.
We fly wingtip to wingtip in silence. The mountain air is cold against both of us. The sky is enormous. The academy is still hidden behind the next range. The scale in my chest goes warm the way it does when we're touching and the touch has no purpose at all, when it's simply the two of us in the space between where we've been and where we're going.
We don't speak. There's nothing to say that the hand and the silence and the flying don't already hold.

Malivore is empty when we arrive.
The rest of the student body comes back tomorrow. The academy starts again the day after the Gathering ends, and most students go from the Gathering to their families rather than straight here. The corridors have the quality they never have in term — the silence of a large place caught between its rhythms, our footsteps echoing off the stone.
Her rooms.
I've been in here enough times that it has its own familiarity. The smell of it. The way the afternoon light comes through the east window. The desk with her things on it in the positions they've held all term, the window where she stands in the late hours, the chair that has become mine the way furniture becomes someone's without anyone saying so.
She closes the door behind us.
The Gathering has been five days of being, all at once, the heir apparent and Raven and the intelligence operator and the political figure and the woman who danced with her brother and laughed and held Leander's hand on the platform above the parade. Five days of running all of it together, which is what she does and does well, and which still costs something. The cost shows in how she stands in the closed room. Not tired exactly. The stillness of someone who has been running everything at full and is finally somewhere that doesn't require full.
