“What?” she asked, looking from one man to the other.

“Anything different happen in the past few days?”

She opened her mouth to speak, stopped, and frowned instead.

“Sedona?” Cam covered her hand with his. He deliberately kept his voice low and soothing. “What is it? Do you remember anything?”

“I remember nothing, but I feel like I should remember an incident, like something happened, and it’s important that I tell you what it is. But there’s this black hole where a memory should be. I need to tell you something, but I can’t remember what.”

CHAPTER ELEVEN

SEDONA GROWLED. “WHY can’t I remember?” This was ridiculous. She usually had excellent recall, so why couldn’t she remember what was nagging at her?

Cam and David exchanged grim glances but said nothing.

Oh, no. She wasn’t letting any explanation for the hole in her memory slip by without at least hearing it. “Let’s hear it, boys. You obviously have some idea why my memory is sketchy, so I want to know what you think.” She prayed what happened hadn’t damaged her brain.

David gave Cam a chin lift.

Cam grimaced.

Sedona narrowed her eyes. “Someone had better talk before I’m ticked off.” She was running out of patience and half terrified of the explanation.

“Look, whatever we tell you is purely speculation unless you remember significant details that discount our theory. There’s an easy, logical explanation for the gap in your memory.”

“Which is?”

He swallowed hard. “Ketamine.”

She stilled. “Isn’t that used on animals?”

“Yeah. People, too. When it’s used on people, Special K can cause significant memory loss.”

“How will I know if I was drugged?”

“The ER doctor sent a blood sample to the lab. Hopefully, that will give us the proof we need to confirm or deny the use of a drug to subdue you.”

Sedona thought about that for a few seconds. “How is the drug administered?”

“Capsule, IV, or a shot.”

A spark of memory flashed through her mind too fast to grasp and examine. One thing was clear, though. She remembered the pain in her neck. Her gaze locked with Cam’s. “Check my neck.”

Cam scowled as his gaze dropped to her neck. “I know about the bruises.”

“Bruises?” She frowned. “Why do I have bruises?” Another memory sparked. Serpent was angry. His hard hands squeezed her neck. She had thought he would kill her. “This isn’t about those. When you mentioned someone possibly drugging me with Ketamine, a memory sparked of pain in my neck. I’m not even sure if it’s real.”

David went to his filing cabinet and opened the top drawer. A moment later, he pulled out a flashlight. “Which side?”

“Right.” Would the men find anything, or was she imagining the pain?

David stepped closer to Sedona. “I’ll hold the flashlight. You examine her neck.”

After a slight nod, Cam focused on Sedona. “May I touch your neck and face?”

Her eyes flooded with tears as she nodded. He was so careful with her. From seeing him in action for several weeks, she knew that was his norm with female victims or witnesses. Suspects were another matter. The interrogation room was the great equalizer.

“Are you sure, Sedona?” he whispered. “I’ll understand if you would rather no one touch you. I can work around it. I only want to give your neck support for a couple of minutes.”
