“I take my sleep very seriously.” The cooling bed had been my first extravagant purchase when I’d received my funds.
He took my lips in a soft kiss. “I’m hard pressed to leave.”
“Mm, you’re onto my grand plan. First, I rear-end cute guys on the freeway in order to meet them. Then I use my comfy bed to trap them here.”
When Caleb laughed, I realized I was staring. It was a sight to behold when he was like this.
“It’s working. You okay with me sleeping here?”
I was surprised, but hid it well. “Do you hog the covers?”
“Nope.”
“Snore?”
“I don’t believe so.”
“Congratulations, you pass.” I was relieved we were comfortable enough to engage in friendly banter.
I fell asleep in his arms, but by the time I woke in the morning, he was gone. I flipped onto my back, my forearm covering my face. Of course he’d left. I’d gone into this well aware we wanted different things long term, but I was unsure where it left us short term. Was this casual sex? And if so, what the hell did it mean?
Annoyed with myself for overthinking it, I headed for a shower. Although I enjoyed spending time with Caleb, and last night had been spectacular, I absolutely wouldn’t become the girl who waited for him to dictate what this was and was not. Which meant we probably needed to define some things.
I finished washing and rinsing my hair, opting afterward to braid it wet and wear it down my back. I planned to make soap today, do some laundry, and run to the grocery store. What I wouldn’t do was obsess over Caleb and what tomorrow in the office would hold.
I’d just put on my apron to start the soap-making process when the buzzer from the lobby sounded. “Hello,” I greeted pressing the intercom button.
“It’s me,” was Caleb’s voice.
I pressed the button to let him in and then quickly ran into my bathroom to check my reflection. It wasn’t often I went without makeup or didn’t arrange my hair, and yet I had no time to do either. At this point the man had seen me naked, did it matter if he saw me sans makeup?
The first thing I noticed when I let him in was he’d showered and changed, which meant he’d gone home. The next thing was the paper bag he was carrying.
He held it up. “I brought breakfast.”
“That’s nice of you.” Him returning with breakfast wasn’t what I’d anticipated. Then again, with Caleb, did I ever know what to expect?
He walked inside, putting the bag on my kitchen counter. “Why the frown?”
“Guess I’m trying to figure you out.”
He sighed. “That makes two of us. I left with the intention of going home and staying there for the day.”
“What made you decide to come back?” He wasn’t exactly kissing me hello.
“I figured we should talk about last night before we go into the office tomorrow.”
Ah. There it was. The real reason he was here. “I really hope your breakfast consists of carbs if we’re about to have ‘the talk.’”
“It’s cinnamon French toast from a café near my house. It’s my favorite.”
“Sounds good.”
The French toast was so incredible I didn’t mind the silence while we ate.
“How was your morning?” He posed the question as though we hadn’t just been naked together a couple hours ago.
“Good. I woke up naked in my comfy bed, took a long shower, then a handsome guy brought me a delicious breakfast.”
