The silence that follows tightens instantly.

“Interesting,” she says at last.

“Excuse me?”

A brief smile brushes her lips.

“I was warned about you.”

Bianca. Of course.

“And what exactly were you told?”

“That you look down on people.”

For a moment, I’m speechless. Then an amused breath escapes me.

“Well, at least you’re honest.”

She gives a faint, almost entertained smile.

“Where’s my workstation?” I ask.

She leans back in her chair with a quiet sigh.

“At the end of the hall.”

“My old office?”

This time, she smiles openly.

“You’ll understand when you see it.”

I rise and head for the door. My hand has already closed around the handle when her voice stops me.

“Ms. Delorme.”

I turn back.

For a brief instant, all the hardness leaves her gaze.

“Welcome home.”

I offer her a small smile.

“Thank you.”

My office is at the end of the hallway.

I take a deep breath before stepping toward the wall terminal.

Retinal scan.

One second of waiting.

“Access granted.”
