I should worry that it’s too soon. That I’m pushing this too hard. That she’s not ready.

But I don’t.

It’s just Blair. It’s just me. It’s over the limit and beyond the pale, and everything about it feels right.

She slides her hand up to my cheek as she lifts her head to look at me. I can see the same emotion swimming in her eyes that owns me every time I look at her. The same emotion I’ve never felt for another person.

When she brushes her lips against mine, when her tongue touches ever so gently with mine, I know I’ve never meant those three words more.

We move in hurried silence. Our pants. Our shirts. Anything to feel the reassurance of each other’s touch to our skin. Of the certainty in our emotions. In the need to connect.

I want my kisses to erase how hard it was for her to stand up for herself.

I want her touch to erase how helpless I feel not being able to stand up for her myself.

We lose ourselves in the tenderness of brushed lips. In the slow simmer of feathered touches. In the notion that this is all we need. Her. Me. Us.

And as I slip into her, as I hear her rapturous murmur of pleasure, I know it’s us against the world.

And I welcome the fight.

For her, I’d do anything.

CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

Lachlan

“Okay. Just so I’m clear, both teams are setting to offer,” I say and glance over to my packed bags at the door. My flight for AMS leaves shortly.

“Correct. The what or the how is still up in the air,” Chandler says.

Chandler and I have been on the phone for nearly five minutes, and really, there’s nothing more to add. I need to do my job, perform to the best of my ability, and he’ll do what he can. He’s fully aware of the irony that I’m being expected to perform for Apex with their car that is underperforming. And he probably expects my next question too. “Any news on Rossi?”

“No. You know I’ve had my feelers out on this but from what I hear, he’s in the same boat. Everyone is waiting to see what the next few races hold.”

“Same boat? Got it. I’m competing against my own teammate. There’s no cause for any drama there.”

“Or maybe that’s just it.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Oh, you know the rumors, Lach. Teams adding more drama to the season to make the sport more interesting. The circuit being fixed so there’s always something new to look at versus the same drivers winning the same races.”

I’ve heard the rumors, but it doesn’t make it any less absurd.

“Fixed. Right.” I roll my eyes. As if they could fix me sleeping with my teammate’s ex-girlfriend and then falling for her. “All I know is that Rossi despises Gravitas with a passion, so that’s in my favor, is it not?”

“Logic says yes . . . but you and I both know there are only twenty seats and at the end of the day, all of you would eat crow if that meant getting a seat, regardless of whether you like the team or not.”

“Are you implying we’re shallow here, Chandler?” I chuckle. It’s good to stir my agent every now and again.

“Not shallow. Just realistic.”

We both laugh.

I scrub a hand through my hair and sigh. “I know. I know.” Isn’t that part of the reason I’m willing to play this fake-dating game with Zola? To try and get in the good graces of Monica who will in turn tell Gravitas to pull the string on signing me?

My phone beeps in my ear and I pull it down to see that it’s Blair on the other line.
