“That’s the other part of ocean safety,” she said when she caught her breath. “The buddy system. Always stay close to someone.”

“Count me in, but can we tweak the definition of buddy at all?”

“Sure.” As they treaded water, she wrapped her legs around his hips and pulled herself against him, flesh to flesh. “I’m very open to suggestion.”

Instead of offering one, he blurted, “How about May twentieth?”

He didn’t know where that random thought came from. It just surfaced from somewhere deep inside. But it was significant, something told him that. So he didn’t take it back.

“May twentieth? What does that mean? That’s the same date Sasha mentioned. What is it?”

“I…have no idea.”

Her confused frown disappeared under the crest of another wave washing over her. When she surfaced, water streaming down her face, she was crowing with delight. “The best surf in days and I don’t have a board with me. Just my luck. Want to body surf with me? I’ll show you some of my tricks.”

Did he want to body surf with her?

Was water wet?

“Always. Forever.” And they dove headlong into the next wave.
