“You okay?” he asks quietly.

I nod, smiling. “Just…taking it all in.”

He follows my gaze, his expression softening. “Hard to believe this was ever just a dream.”

“For a while, I didn’t think we’d make it,” I admit.

He squeezes my waist gently. “I never doubted it.”

I tilt my head to look up at him slyly. “You’re only allowed to say that now because we’re safe.”

He chuckles, low and warm. “Fair.” He presses a kiss to my temple, fingers intertwining with mine as his lips ghost on the mark still glowing on my neck.

The mark of the mate bond. It glimmers like a gold jewel that attests to our love, and it tingles now, making me aware of where Sean’s mind is going. I giggle under my breath, reminding him that we’re the hosts for tonight’s barbecue, and we can’t disappear yet.

Though he pouts his disappointment—which I think is awfully cute—we join the others at the bottom, living out a dream in our own little bubble of comfort and safety.

Later, when the night deepens and the chill settles in, we slip away without announcement. No one stops us. No one needs to. Everyone has had dinner, and the world is safe enough now that love doesn’t have to be guarded like a secret.

Our room overlooks the mountains, moonlight spilling through tall windows and painting everything silver. I kick off my shoes and sit at the edge of the bed, suddenly quiet, suddenly heavy with thoughts I’ve carried for years.

Sean notices immediately. He always does. “What’s going on in that head of yours, angel?”

I take a deep breath. Then another. “I’ve been thinking about your mom...”

The air shifts, but Sean doesn’t pull away. Instead, he sits beside me and takes my hand, even when I feel the weight of my words land between us.

“She would’ve loved this place,” I continue softly. “She would’ve loved seeing you like this. At peace.”

Sean sits quietly, a finger stroking my knuckles. For a moment, he doesn’t speak. But then he takes a slow, steady breath in. “When Mom died…” he finally says, voice low, “everything in me hardened. I thought if I stopped feeling, I could survive her death.”

My throat tightens. “I know.”

“I pushed people away,” he continues. “Especially you. Because you reminded me of everything before she died. You reminded me of what it felt like when she was still around.”

I turn toward him fully now. “Losing her broke me too, Sean. I just…broke differently. I went quiet. I hid.”

His eyes glisten with tears. “I didn’t make it any easier by rejecting you. I should have been there for you. I’m sorry,” he says, his voice not rushed, not defensive. Just honest. “For every time I shut you out. For every time I made you feel like you had to earn your place beside me.”

Emotion swells in my chest, warm and aching. “I’m stubborn,” I admit with a small smile. “I don’t always say what I need. But I’ve always cared. Even when I was scared.”

He reaches for my hands, lacing our fingers together. “I promise you…I won’t push you away again. Not ever.”

Something inside me settles warmly. Not with fireworks, but with certainty.

“I love you,” I tell him. Not as a confession, but as a truth he already knows, but one that should be spoken.

His smile is soft, reverent. “I love you too, Emily.”

The rest unfolds slowly; kisses that linger, touches that speak of safety instead of urgency. The world outside fades until it’s just us, wrapped in warmth and moonlight and the quiet promise of a future we get to choose.

After, when I rest my head against his chest and listen to the steady rhythm of his heart, I realize something profound.

The war is over.

Not just the one we fought with magic and blood and prophecy, but the one inside of us.

Tomorrow, we’ll talk about rebuilding. About creating a world where witches don’t have to hide, and wolves don’t have to fight to exist. A world where power is guided by love instead of fear.

But tonight?

Tonight is ours.

And for the first time, the future feels wide open and safe enough to dream in.

Somehow, my dreams always had Sean in them. Now, I get to live out my dreams, and I couldn't be happier.
