“We fucked on someone’s grave last weekend.”

“Anne?” he gasped.

“Wait—you two know each other? Aren’t you married?” Eva said. Not even whispering now.

I chuckled with delight. I should switch the lights on just to see their expressions.

“Yeah, Gareth. Are you married?” Anne said, and I heard her yanking on the cage door.

Silence.

“Did you think it was okay to deceive me like that?” Anne asked. I heard the amusement beneath the mock indignation.

“My wife wasn’t giving me much attention,” he muttered.

I adjusted my pillows and switched the lamp off.

“Poor you,” Anne said drily.

“Never mind that. We need to coordinate an attack and get out of here. That guy is not stable. He’s a nutter.”

“Are you a psychologist, Gareth?” Anne asked sweetly.

“What? No.”

“So you’re not qualified to make any kind of mental assessment.”

Silence.

“He has us locked in cages at an undisclosed location. I’ve been here a week,” Eva hissed.“The man is not fucking right in the head.”

Anne chuckled.“Sure.”

She wasn’t defending me. She was defending herself.

Interesting.

Eva and Gareth continued to whisper, but Anne didn’t speak again.

I closed my eyes and wondered what tomorrow would bring.

Chapter 7

Anne

The lights came on abruptly and I blinked as my eyes adjusted. Eva and Gareth’s mundane chatter had put me to sleep. The footsteps came, clicking on the cement floor. Before I looked at him, the silver drain caught my eye. Gareth looked awful, stubble thickening. Eva was too busy staring at the kidnapper in horror.

I turned my head. Pale grey suit. Expensive. Clean-shaven jaw. I could take more than his stubble off—an incision from the hairline, tracing the ears, jaw and chin, peeling his face away cleanly.

Those dark eyes would do well in my dehydrator. Shrivelled to the size of a marble before I sliced off the harder sections and used the malleable portion.

Broad shoulders and chest.

I’d put my knife into him so many times he’d resemble a pin cushion. His own reinforced knives would be perfect for it.

He tossed a foiled package and a banana into each cage. I moved closer as he approached mine. He paused to glance at my hands before pushing the food through the bars.

“How do you expect me to wipe my arse with these on?”
