As he reenters the bedroom, I attempt to reach for the towel.

He shakes his head, pulling the towel away from my reach. “Relax.”

I fight the urge to roll my eyes as I lie back against the pillows.

It feels strange having Cormac be so attentive. But then again, this is the first time we’ve ever made it to a bed. And I hate to admit it, but it feels nice.

When he’s done, I half-expect him to pull on his clothes and head out the door, but to my complete surprise, he doesn’t. Instead, he climbs back into bed and pulls me into his arms like it’s the most natural thing in the world.

I try not to tense as he pulls my body flush against him, not wanting to draw attention to the fact that I am completely freaking out.

Is he planning on staying the night?

Do Iwanthim to stay the night?

My first thought is yes, but that only makes me freak out more.

The two of us lay tangled in each other's arms, letting the silence settle between us.

I find a strange sort of comfort in the sound of Cormac’s heartbeat and the feeling of his chest rising and falling against my back. It would be all too easy to close my eyes and fall asleep. But I can’t let myself give in, so I pretend to drift off to sleep in the hopes that he might leave. Not because I want him to, but because of how safe I currently feel wrapped up in his arms.

My sister always said if something feels too good to be true, it probably is. And I have a horrible feeling that she’s right.

I’m digging myself into a hole that I might not be able to escape from. I can tell myself all I like that I have things under control, but when nights like tonight happen, it becomes clear as day that being with Cormac makes me want to do things that might end up costing me my heart. And that scares the fuck out of me.

There is no way this can end well. Even if I manage to get Lorcan the information he needs without Cormac getting hurt, there’s no way he won’t end up finding out I’ve been working for his uncle.

My stomach knots as I think of how betrayed Cormac will feel. Especially now that Scout is in the picture.

What have I done?

Chapter Twenty-Six

CORMAC

Daddy daycare ft.Brennan

BRENNAN: How’s everything going in the land of dirty diapers?

KIERAN: Why don’t you come over and find out?

RONAN: You better be pulling your weight and not letting everything fall on Riley.

KIERAN: What kind of asshole do you take me for?

BRENNAN: A huge one?

KIERAN: She hasn’t lifted a finger since the moment she turned up on my doorstep, and I intend to keep it that way.

BRENNAN: Kiss ass

KIERAN: How’s waking up to an empty bed every morning?

BRENNAN: How’s being covered in baby vomit?

CORMAC: Why can I never seem to mute these chats?

RONAN: What do you need, Brennan?
