He swipes a hand through his hair. “Will is doing fine.”
I rub my chin. “Still no word about Grey? No sightings?” I ask him.
Luke shakes his head. “I think he got the hell out of dodge. I don’t think we’re going to see him.”
My gut twists, and I grimace. “No, I think something else is going on. We don’t have the full picture.”
Luke frowns. “How do you figure that? If he was hiding on Kensington property, Will would have told us by now.”
My mind goes to what Shiloh told me earlier. “No I think he’s scared about something else. But I don’t know what.”
“What does he have to be scared of other than being arrested and his father?” Luke asks.
I shake my head. “I don’t know, maybe he made a mistake, and he’s trying to fix it.”
Chapter 33
Ledger
Shilohthankfullycalledmeand waited at the diner so I could follow her home and make sure she got in the house.
I went back to work, and we got suited up. I gave instructions to the rest of my deputies. Now, Luke, an extra DEA hand, and I are on our way to Bobby’s Feed Store while Lawrence and his team go to Perry’s. Let’s hope no one called in sick.
We’ve been watching all of them for months, collecting surveillance, and they have hardly, if ever, varied from routine. A working farm needs consistency and schedules. On top of that, they’re so buttoned up; the only reason we know they’re major sellers is through secondhand information, confirmed by Will. It would be easy to assume our suspects were ranch hands because Kensington Ranch raises a lot of cattle and other animals.
I pull my personal truck into the parking lot, looking for John’s old beat-up Chevy.
“There it is,” Luke says.
“Got it.”
I pull up behind it to block it in and we wait.
I’ve got the entrance to the parking lot, while Luke has the store doors, and our extra, Zach has the back, every angle covered.
Everything is quiet, normal. Nothing to be concerned about. It’s a typical Wednesday.
I take a deep breath and check my phone to see if Shiloh texted me. My stomach is in knots, knowing this could put her in further danger.
“Suspect walking out now,” Luke says.
I leave the truck idling, ready to drive off after they grab him.
Zach and Luke get ready to hop out. In my mirrors, I can see John throw his hands up in frustration because I’m blocking him in.
He shakes his head and walks behind the truck.
Luke and Zach hop out.
I put the truck into drive.
Ten seconds and a list of curse words, and threats later John is in the truck.
And I’m driving out of the parking lot. Straight for the station.
Zach cuffs him and reads him his rights.
“You don’t know what you’re doing man. This is a bad idea. You’re going to get all of us killed!” John says.
