She couldn't interpret his expression. Did he think her crazy?
"My father used to read this very book to me when I was a child," she said. "So, I thought, since he will one day own this book, I can leave him a note in it about what happened to me."
"You're staying with me. Forever," Gavin whispered as if he hadn't truly believed she would until this moment.
"Of course I'm staying. I love you."
"And I love you, beyond all. You possess my heart, and if not for you—" He shook his head.
After placing the book aside, she stood and took him into her arms. He drew her close and kissed her. He was her one and only; he was her life. At one time, she had questioned whether he was worth everything she would have to give up. She now knew he was. A thousand percent.
The door burst open, startling her. She glanced around to find Lunn grinning. "None of that now. 'Tis time for a dance!"
"Very well," Gavin said, then turned to her as they followed Lunn from the room. "I came to tell you that a returning clansman spotted Wilona and Alpin near Loch Awe."
Dani strained to hear Gavin over the music and laughter in the great hall. "In human form?"
"Aye, and traveling deeper into the Highlands. I've sent missives to Brodie and Torr. I'm hoping they will find her and stop her."
"I don't know if Alpin is her boy toy or her lapdog," Dani said.
Gavin chuckled.
"And I'll take you for my boy toy." She tugged at his arm and kissed his cheek.
"If that means lover, I agree." He grinned and pulled her close for a dance. He kissed her while his hands busied themselves on her butt.
"Stop it." She tugged his hands upward.
The hall grew quiet. She hesitated, then glanced around. A hundred smiling faces greeted her, and a raucous cheer went up along with whistles and whoops.
"To Chief and Lady MacTavish!" a man yelled.
Everyone raised their tankards and goblets.
She faced Gavin, smiling. "I'm glad your clan returned."
"I told you they'd love you. But nay as much as I do," Gavin murmured in her ear.
