She swore she could see mirth in his eyes, but since he was her patient, it would not be best practices to hit him over the head with a heavy object. She gritted her teeth, and said, “I sewed it up right the first time. And I’m sewing it up right this time, but ye have to let yer body heal.”
“I have work to do.”
“And if ye kill yerself being stubborn, someone else will take over yer work, so it will be done.”She squatted alongside him to get a good look at the gash again. She touched the small part where the stitches had opened. It dinna look too serious because he was well on his way to mending, but she had to make him realize that his body needed time to completely heal.
“I would prefer if we moved to yer bedchamber.”
He grinned.“’Tis fine with me, lass.I can’t remember the last time a beautiful lass said that to me.”
She shook her head.“Nay, my laird.Even a mild activity like that could break open yer stitches.”
He sat up, winced, and then glared at her.“Mild activity!”
It was her turn to grin.“Let us go, my laird.‘Tis time to get ye stitched back up again.”
They made their way to the laird’s bedchamber where she removed his leine and had him lie on the bed.“Ye can join me, lass.It might be easier to do yer work.”
She rolled her eyes.“I am here to sew ye back up again. Then I will give ye a potion so ye will sleep and give yer body time to heal from this latest injury,” she said as she cleaned the wound with warm water and a clean cloth.‘Twas only necessary to sew two stitches. The warrior he was training with must have hit him directly in that spot.
“Why am I always catching the two of ye alone in the laird’s bedchamber?”Craig entered the room, a grin on his face.
Helena stood up, her fingers sticky with honey, and glared at him.“Yer brother decided ‘twas time to rip out a few stitches.”
“No’ well done, my laird,” Craig said.He pulled up a chair next to the bed and sat.“A messenger just arrived with information that The Gunn will be arriving in two days.”
The laird looked at Helena as she wrapped his wound.“I canno’ look injured when The Gunn arrives.”
“The best thing ye can do to prevent looking weak is to not visit the lists for a few days—aye, a week would be good.”She stood back, admiring her work.“I will be honest with ye, though.Except for the two stitches ye lost, ye’re healing nicely.”
Craig slapped his hands on his thighs and stood.“I needs to clean up for the evening meal.”
Once the door closed, the laird said, “I think ye owe me another kiss.”
Her stomach clenched, but she tried to pretend unconcerned.“How do ye figure that, my laird?”
He studied her for a minute.“My name is Robin.Mayhaps ye can use that?”
Helena shook her head.“Nay, ‘twould be disrespectful.”
Robin took her hand and tugged until she landed alongside him on the bed.“Because ye are the prettiest healer I’ve ever seen.”
She laughed.“Whatever does that have to do with giving me a kiss, especially since ye already got a kiss.”Her heart hammered at his words. He was so very handsome and the mirth she always saw in his eyes—when he wasn’t ordering everyone around—made him especially appealing.
As his healer she’d seen enough of his body to know he was possessed of a warrior’s body.Strong, muscular, and powerful. If only she could put him from her mind, but each time she was in his company, the attraction grew stronger.
He reached up and pushed a lock of hair behind her ear.“I enjoyed that kiss and want to see if my memory is good, or if my injury has dimmed my recollection.”
If she was smart, she would hop up and leave the room. Her pull to this man was foolish, especially if she allowed these kisses that he seemed to think she owed him.The last kiss left her thinking about it for days.He had a duty to marry well and she had a duty to return to Sutherland and allow her aunt to retire from her duties.
There could never be anything between them, except heartache for her.Against her better judgment, she allowed him to cup her face in his hands and lower her head to him.Her common sense screamed to her to stop this, put an end to the temptation.
Her fascination with the man who was so far above her told her common sense to be quiet.Robin pulled her down alongside him and covered her mouth with his.Yes, this was a mistake. But that was the last thing she thought before everything around her disappeared and all she could see, think, or feel was warm, moist lips.
Robin moved his head to take the kiss deeper and nudged her lips with his tongue.Surprised, she opened her mouth, and he delved in, tasting, moving to spots he had no idea were sensitive. He pulled away slightly, then descended once again on her mouth.
This time she met his tongue with hers.He pulled her close until she was laying on top of him, her breasts pressed against his bare chest.
“Um, excuse me.”Craig’s voice brought her back to her senses. She jerked up, almost throwing herself off the bed.If Robin’s arm hadn’t been around her she would have landed on the floor.
