Sarah laughed. ‘No, she’s sweet. They often come and visit. Did Felix tell you we rent out the tipis for holidays now we’re living in the flat? Life under canvas is Dad’s idea of heaven, he’s our best customer.’

‘Yes, Felix told me about renting them out. That’s a great idea. I’m very pleased this old place is in safe hands.’

‘It’s been a team effort. Kate’s been so helpful advising us on the holiday lets.’ Kate grinned, and Bob cleared his throat. ‘Sorry,’ said Sarah, patting Bob’s arm. ‘Bob’s been helping too, of course.’

‘I’d like to add one last toast please,’ said Sarah.

‘Hurry up, love,’ said Joy. ‘I’m getting parched here.’

‘Joy, let the girl speak,’ said Bob.

‘I’d like to make a toast to forgiveness, and family,’ said Sarah. ‘Anyone walking in here would look at us and think what a strange bunch we are. And it would be true. But aren’t the best families the ones who all have their quirks but love each other anyway? You’ve all forgiven me, accepted me, loved me, and made this place home for me. So, let’s raise our glasses to family.’

Echoes of cheers floated beyond the café and into the forest. Trees swayed, cocooning the makeshift family at the heart of them.
