We say our goodbyes and I go about my business.

I’m brushing my teeth when I hear a knock sound from my front door.

It’s almost 9 o’clock at night. Who could that possibly be?

ADAM

I’ve been giddy all day.

Ever since that night at my apartment when I was sick, I’ve felt things between Kayla and me grow day by day.

Today, when I walked through the news room, I caught her staring at me, and she might as well have been drooling. That’s how transfixed she was.

It’s almost comical how much she’s trying to convince herself that she doesn’t want me.

I have the evening free. So I’m going to go over to her place. My intentions are wicked, but I’m not sure I care.

I figure I will kill two birds with one stone; I will visit with Brady while also putting myself in her orbit. If I’m lucky, maybe she’ll jump my bones.

I take a shower, put on a nice pair of jeans and a Henley and douse myself in a cologne that she mentioned she likes on me.

Then I am on my way.

I am practically vibrating in my seat as I drive to her place.

I don’t know what’s up with the traffic tonight, but it’s moving like molasses. Normally, it would irritate me, but nothing can bring down my mood.

Scratch that.

When I get to her place, I park about a block away. Kayla is standing outside, talking to some asshole. From the set of his body, he clearly wants her.

I watch as they make eyes at each other, then he leans in for a kiss. At which point I tear out of my parking space and jet off.

Am I going insane?

Have I been hallucinating all the times I’ve seen desire in Kayla’s eyes?

Has it all been wishful thinking?

How could I be so wrong?

She’s seeing someone else.

She’s seeing someone else.

She’s seeing someone else.

That’s wild to me.

It would be one thing if she were interested in someone else, but she’s actually seeing another man.

After I park my car in my building’s underground parking garage, I go up to my condo in zombie mode and climb into bed.

This is so strange. I recognize this feeling. It’s reminiscent of how I felt when I was standing at that altar and Rachel’s maid of honor whispered in my ear, “She’s not coming.”

That’s insane. My heart was breaking then. It can’t possibly be breaking now?
